You might try CamStudio, it's free.

Or Fraps.

You can get a free demo, though it has some restrictions.

The following link will take you to 6 pages of step-by-step instruction and FAQ on how to make a video with FRAPS and other tools: Audacity, the GIMP. Format Factory, and AoA Audio Extractor. All but FRAPS are free.

Very helpful!

What do you use to convert the wmv file into something that SL can use? I have a nice, short (2 minutes) very clear wmv video, and every time I try to convert it into a mov or mp4 file it looks terrible. I've tried on line converters (zamzar, media convert) and offline converters (yasa video converter) and the results are always a blurry mess.

Thanks,

Doug

Torley Linden's excellent tutorial video might help you kill 2 birds with 1 stone. This works a treat, you can upload your wmv to youtube, and now that youtube makes a lot (not all) videos available in mp4 format you can stream them right into an inworld screen:

For converting file formats yourself, I've found "Free Video Converter 1.5" very flexible, and with almost every setting customisable to get the best quality:

AnotherPerson Looking For Good Screen Cap Software
03-14-2009 23:10
Heya!

I'm looking for some screen recording software for creating video tutorials for sculpties. At the moment, I use CamStudio, but find it to be rather iffy on whether or not it's going to actually work. Half the time I get an error that it can't find the video, after it asks me to save.

Is there anything with similar capabilities, but less bugs, out there? Doesn't have to be free, but under $100 should be manageable, I'd think.

Specifically, what I'm looking for is quality of video at least on par with Camstudio, capability of specifying recording window size, auto-follow of the mouse, and mouse highlighting.

Anyone know of anything that will work for me?
ETA:: Windows XP

I use Hypercam from Hypertronics, is allows you to select an area of the screen to record, cursor tracking and allows you to move the selector screen on the fly. Free trail avalable and its around 49 USD to buy with lifetime updates. Works for me.

Free version only records SWF and I don't want to shell out for an unknown quantity. Nice interface, though.

Also things change faster than the Wiki reflects.

Free screen recorder for Mac users
04-23-2009 22:35
I hadn't seen a reference in the forums here to this free screen recorder called Berio for Mac (requires PPC 867 G4 or Intel Mac) - It works very nicely.

as the creator states on his website / and the app is available from..

http://www.juniortan.com/Public/Berio.html

Quoted from his webpage "Free, unsupported screen recording goodness that’s great for creating tutorial movies, demonstration content and illustrative animations.

This is a preliminary minimalist version. There’ll be a better version with preferences, etc."

Tiny app. with 2 buttons:- Start recording / good, better , best (quality)

If you have Quicktime Pro also check out his Schlomo app. which creates movies by using 3 second interval screenshots.

I was alpha testing HC3 and am now beta testing it, it is WAY better than HC2. HC2 is a good program and the free trial version is fully functional and is a permanent license but leaves a water mark on the upper left hand corner of your vids. If you buy HC2 the water mark leaves and you only get the free updates for the 2.x HC for life. An upgrade to HC3.x is going to cost additional funds. I don't know the pricing of V3 yet but beta testing ends July 1st;maybe, it has already been extended once.

Get the beta test version here

There is a saying... (lindens please read) If it isn't broken, don't try fixing it...

HyperCam is a good programme for my workflow. It has a small memory/cpu footprint, has all the bells and whistles like a good range of codex (if you really need them), cursor capture, cursor hilighting (with adjustable glow settings), sound recording/capture, and what is very important for my style of working, the ability to dynamically select not just the whole screen, or window, but what portion I want. I can simply draw the capture area on my screen, and that's what I get. It saves wasting data I don't actually need. You can also capture alpha layers (overlays on the screen).

Now before you ask, I do not work for Hypertronics (the former owners of the programme), I just like to pass on a personal testimonial for a programme that I have found very useful in making machinima. This suits MY workflow, it may not suit everyones.

HyperCam 3 may have some improvements, although, I cannot think what else I would need, that V2 doesn't already give me, except making me coffee during filming. What I see with HyperCam V3, is a rebranding and packaging of what is a good programme... Jelly buttons do not appeal to me.. and the 'enhancements' they list, only one is new... editing your movie clips within HyperCam... well I didn't spend $500 on a professional editing programme, so I could use a $50 alternative.. it's a marketing hype feature.

I still use an older version of the SL Client, its as stable as it gets, more reliable than most recent offerings... If it works... I don't need it fixing.
