As machinima producers, are you looking forward to the new cam controls? What other types of cam controls are on your wishlist?

From the Announcement forums: From: someone * FollowCam functionality allows scripts to control the camera ** Scripts on attachments and vehicles can now control camera behavior through a call to llSetCameraParams(), once they have acquired the PERMISSION_CONTROL_CAMERA permission ** The script will control the user's camera as long as the resident doesn't override it (use Alt-zoom or enter mouselook, for example) and the object remains attached or the avatar continues to sit on it: *** When multiple scripts attempt to control the camera, the last script to set the CAMERA_ACTIVE flag will have control *** Older scripts will regain control as soon as the newer one is deactivated ** The new FollowCam scripts enable a huge variety of vehicle-following behaviors: *** For instance, a loose camera setting allows sudden changes in vehicle acceleration to happen without causing dizzying jolts in the camera *** By turning off the "behindness" feature, the camera will be simply dragged along, but it will not try to stay exactly behind the vehicle *** Other parameters, like pitch (the angle at which it "looks down" at the vehicle), distance, and others, allow you to customize the cinematics of vehicular fun I can't script for the life of me, but I can totally see how this will make filming for machinima even more sophisticated. If anything would be in my wish list, it'd be the ability to use these new functions without scripting.

However, Francis Chung scripted her Dominus Shadow to take advantage of them, and boyyy does it feel a lot more like GTA or one of those racing games! I sure look forward to more.

I sure look forward to more. Oh! I remember riding in my Dominus while my friend was driving. She managed to flip the car a complete 360 going off a hill. And we landed perfectly upright. Hehe. I wish I could've filmed that. That was so awesome. Had I been driving, I wouldn't have had my wits about me to even move my cam to view that stunt. Of course, I didn't get to take a pic though. :/ I'm slow. I will wait to see how the scripters utilize this for filming and for other gadgetry.

camera hopes

For machinima, it would be cool to have some camera "lens effects" we could use, like rack focus (shifting focus between near and far planes), long lenses to "compress" distance and a selectable depth of field. Do the "focus" parameters in the new cam controls do any of these?
Do the new cam controls support smooth physical moves, like llMoveCamToTarget() or are the camera positions all discrete jumps? I hope smooth moves are possible.
I'd like to use the controls for smooth dolly shots, pan shots and follow shots. Imagine scripting the camera to circle your actors. You could get a Matrix-like, "round the world" shot.
I agree that this camera functionality needs to be available to use without knowing scripting. I think what will happen is that "camera" objects will be designed and sold that will allow the use of the camera controls by simple commands. These camera objects will be able to record camera moves and play them back for repeated shots or follow a notecard of parameters to execute a shot. These camera objects will come with some prerecorded moves like dolly, pan, follow, zoom, circle.
I'd like to see the "camera view" available to other avatars besides the cameraman. If the view could be echoed to a "monitor" object, or to other avatars, the rest of a film crew could watch as shots are in progress.
Happy days for machinima!
