Another video showing shadows. But this one shows time-lapse footage
as the sun rises and sets.

There's also another download link to the client file:

I installed everything, followed the instructions and came up with these points.

It is not for Vista.. XP is ok.

If you use the RC suggested, go into debug menu and look for RenderGlow and lower the default value from .950 to say .500 if you find the glow overpowering.

It failed to work on Vista with the latest RC, which btw has a Command window open behind the main client, possibly they forgot to turn off the debug window. If you close it, the client crashes. If you run the latest client with the file changes, and turn on the Render elements in the debug menu, you get some pretty colours lol..

I noticed Sim Ping was around 1000msec, not sure if that was 'just sl', or the client doing some strange things. Fps dropped to around 2-4, whereas I normally get well over 45, and did again, once I turnned off Advanced Shaders when using the SecondlifeShadows Client, although lost shadows.

Playing with the editor, and running the day cycle timer, making '24 hours' last 60 seconds, gave some interesting effects.

I tested it on several sims, it didn't seem to work on some, maybe due to the server code revision, or TPing altering settings somehow.

I'll test it more, when the Sim Ping appears more stable.

I was helping a girl with this the other day. She couldn't run the shadows on Vista and latest RC, but I sent her RC11 and it worked, so you might want to give it a try :)

There are two threads about this same subject.

Primarily, it will not work with the latest RC.

I tested it on a system running Vista, all I got was some pretty pinks and purple colours. When I changed to XP, it worked. Both were running the 1.19 client.

http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php

It's the current stable client. RC is 1.20.14, but the main client is 1.19.1.4

Also, it works with the beta grid viewer from the same page, bottom right.

Very cool stuff. I can't wait for this to be fully implemented.

Of course, the downside is many builders will have to redesign to incorporate this new technology. For instance, many (if not all) of my builds, models, etc, have not only baked shadows, but also realistic drop shadows--if the new engine is to incorporate accurate drop shadows, I will have to remove the shadows from my builds and models. In the future, I will only then be creating drop shadows based on static light sources.

It's a good start. Of course, my computer won't be able to run it...I'm already getting under 10FPS...I'm sure a real-time shadow system will make my computer cry.
