Hi!
The SL Video capture for Mac has been broken for a long time. Go here to add your vote to the complaint list.

You can try a program called iShowU to do screen capture. It's not all that bad.

This is a frustration for Mac users although I have never managed to get this feature to work on a PC either.

iShowU is pretty good although it captures within an area rather than for a specific piece of software. I recommend running SL in full screen mode rather than in a window to avoid the dock and menu bar.

It's pretty good software for the price with a number of dcent features. Needs to install some audio drivers before it will capture system audio but thats ot a huge problem.

Snapz is also pretty good witha good balance of features but is more expensive than iShowU.

It seems a pity that the Mac users sre denied the prolifercation of screen capture software in abundance for the PC. Fraps, or my favourite HyperCam are very useful tools. I prefer HyperCam for 2 reasons, it allows me to set the capture window size that suits me, and I can dynamically move the capture pane whilst filming.

The Mac has always historically been a 'graphics' based system, seems ludicrous that no one is supplying graphic software of this calibre.

I found the following links:

Is that enough? GL

Hmmm... I'm just getting interested in machinima. I'm a striking member of the WGA, looking for new places to express a little creativity. I'm disappointed to hear that Mac users are under-served. I appreciate the list of links, AWM. That helps!

I'm using both iShowU and SnapZPro and I've ran a bunch of tests with both applications using various codecs. The ones that have produced the "best" results are:

Length of capture = 25 secs.
Client = SL Viewer (standard) version 1.18.5.3

iShowU:
Preset Name = DV NTSC
Slow frame rate = grayed out
Normal frame rate = 29.97
Scale = 100%
Quality = Max
Compression = Apple Cinepak

SnapZPro:
Selection Style = Normal
Camera Mode = fixed camera
Frame Rate = 30
Scale = 50%
Use Movie Guides = checked
Smoother = checked
Color Range = millions

On final render = Apple animation/best quality/best depth

I'm running a G5 (Power PC) w/8 gigs of RAM/1T Internal RAID/ATI Radeon Mac Pro (256)

Hope that helps. Please IM me or post a question here if you need additional specs.

It is SO irritating that the Movie-to-Disk feature for Mac has now been broken for over six months, and nothing has been done about it.

I produced a number of SL-based videos using this feature until the viewer revision where it broke. As most of us know, trying to capture video in SL using this feature now results in an immediate crash, if not just SL than the entire OS, requiring a hard restart.

While I'm aware there are alternatives using external software, it was very handy and convenient to not have to run another app to perform this function.

I submitted a support ticket about this immediately after it was broken, and in typical Linden fashion, nothing happened, nothing's been addressed, and no response has been issued. I certainly love SL and consider myself a strong supporter, having brought 40-50 folks into world since joining, but this is really unfortunate, and the lack of response has been disheartening. It's stuff like this that will make it an easier decision to jump ship when a competing metaverse becomes viable.

Here are a few of the vids I made before the "Capture Movie To Disk" feature became unusable for the Mac:

I'm a Mac user and I've used both SnapzPro and iShowU and I have to say that iShowU is definitely better at capturing video. In fact it's probably the best software screencapture program out there - mac or pc. I've used it to do lots of machinima and tutorials - here's some links:

Machinima: http://nscape.tv/2007/05/14/rockstars/
Screencast (windows running in parallels): http://www.freevlog.org/index.php/2007/03/19/7-upload-and-post-your-video/

What makes iShowU really good is that you can select what codec it uses to capture with. I've found PhotoJpeg to be really good a preserving all the little details and easy on the cpu so you take a minimal hit on fps. Then the thing really make it all work is editing in a program like Final Cut Pro where you keep the video in the photojpeg codec and keep it de-interlaced. Now you can do all of these things in SnapzPro too but it takes forever to save your files. You may have to wait 10+ minutes between shots. iShowU takes about a second between shots.
