Here is the slow movement of my Flute Sonata, a sad tale about Love's bitter-sweet taste.
The Audio features the flute playing of Gareth Lockrane, Gareth is a true vituoso on the instrument, and for many shrewd judges he is the best Jazz-Flute player in the world. The Sonata is published in the USA, so if any of you SL flautists feel you MUST have a copy, drop me an IM. ( coughs....I am not expecting my IM's to be capped over this.......) I fully expected machinima to be difficult, doing this has been a real eye-opener about the technical hurdles that must be overcome.....not for the faint-hearted.

Excellent !!!!
The movie flows very well with the music.
To assist you with composition, research Ken Burns technique. Although orginally used in photography, with the right editing software, you can use the same morphing pan shots to get zoomed closeups without the SL jitters, over the scene timeline.
Great job.

That was an excellent movie. Long gone are the days of dancing avatar machinimas and good riddance (with the exception of Wuvme Karuna's "Return to Innocence", which was pretty damn good and Arahan Claveau's "Clanger's Inventions" which was exceptionally good.) ......... Ok so there are one or two good dancing avatar movies, but you get the point. Good movies like this make it even harder for one to stick there neck out and take the plunge themselves, but I'm going to give it a go in the new year. Well done Orfeu, good job!!

Thank you for your kind estimation, and useful tips. I have read your posts on this technique, and it does indeed sound useful. There are some scenarios I came across where the FPHud was not useful/available and it is nigh on impossible to get smooth camera movts from the SL Camera alone. I note that you use Sony Vegas as your movie editing prog. Does one need the fancy/shmancy version, or does the basic (ie cheap) version cut the mustard ?

From: Iridescent Coronet Long gone are the days of dancing avatar machinimas and good riddance That made me lol Iridescent, beacause I have an inventory stuffed with Sinewave dances, and was sorely tempted to bust them out. SL machinima seems to be suited to whizz-bang action, rather than brooding emotion. Although in saying that, profound emotion is one of the hallmarks of Robbie Dingo's work, so it seems one must find other ways to achieve deeper feeling. The dance anime's of Sinewave and Bits and Bobs are some of the most detailed work in SL, but though they are engaging visually, they don't offer too much in the way of driving a narrative forward. Or at least thats how it seems to a hapless Machinima Noob. Thank you for your appreciation.

Maybe I should reassess my statement, I'm always shooting my mouth off without thinking lol. Dancing avatar movies, if done well and in an original way, can be worth watching, but I've seen so many that obviously took about 10mins to produce. So if you've got something interesting to do go for it. I, and I'm sure many others, would love to see them! Of course I'm talking in the capacity of a viewer and not a producer, yet, so maybe I should STFU until I release something myself. If there's one thing I detest it's a non-producing critic.

I started with the basic version which has the timeline pan/crop I spoke about. I moved onto the Ultimate version to gain the unlimited layers, 2 movie, 1 text, 1 background and 4 music/speech/sound effects layers are enough for anyone producing movies for the vast majority of users, but I needed more. Its a hell of a step up in price, for that gain alone, but gives me more flexibility. What's really cool, is you can not just use the timeline control the pan/crop/rotate, but all the effects, changing them using keyframes.

From: Wuvme Karuna I liked the arguing part hehe Thx Wuvme. The argument animations, are what made me think of doing this movie. They add essential contrast to the lovely Rendezvous Romantic couples poses.

This was lovely, Orfeu. Sad that Eurydice always slips away.
Was it really your first machinima? Very ambitious!
The music is haunting, but very open - one could envision a suite of very different machinima, each to the same music. I suppose some folks have run music video contests on that scheme ...
Is the full sonata available recorded anywhere?

Well, I had done one previously, which was something of a test. This gave me a better idea, of what needs to be controlled in SL when shooting, and what can be done by the editing process in Post-Production. I will IM you in-world about access to the full Sonata. Thanks for the appreciation Nika. Quite true, how different machinima makers would interpret this piece of music. I may have a perverse nature, but I am interested in using SL machinima to explore melancholy, tragedy, the poignant, regrets, and colours from the darker end of the emotional spectrum. I have nothing against, uplifting, amusing , frothy confections. It is just that the darker side of the emotions represents a real challenge in a cheerful bright Cartoon world. (Note to self, when you have finished your next wallow in misery............try a comedy FFS. )
