How do you control lighting in interior shots?

I'm driving myself NUTS trying to get a pool of light on the character as she reads in bed.

Just make a prim and set it to "light." Adjust the light parameters. Set your scene in the dark so the light shows up.

Make sure there aren't lights around flooding too much light on the scene.

There is an alternative, which is to not light the subject in SL... but, instead to create the same effect in your editing software. Basically, this means creating a mask, shaping and softening it to match your shots and then applying different colour grades either side of the mask.

Thanks - I'll try the in-world method first.
