Hi there,
I'm running Vista on a PC, and you should know I am basically computer illiterate.
I have spent the last 4 days late into the night, working on a basic project, to be uploaded to Youtube, involving music, along with photos, and movie clips, taken from SL, filmed in avi format.
I used Hypercam to film the video clips, and didn't adjust any of the settings to do so, as I'd previously recorded, and published without error with it, a short time ago.
I imported the avi files, into Windows Movie Maker (the only programme of the sort I have available - can't get anything else right now), without trouble, from the same file they were recorded into, and added effects such as sepia tone, or ageing.
Now after publishing, the music and pictures are there, but in the slots where the video footage was, the screen remains black, however the effects such as ageing, remain. Yet it still plays perfectly in the preview pane of the Windows Movie Maker.
I just tried to publish a previous segment of footage I'd used, and published just fine, and it happened to that too. I don't know what's happened. Nothing on the PC has changed since the last publication.
How can I make the video clips appear in the published movie? Is all my hard work done timescaling the clips of footage doomed ?
Also, when publishing, I have found a loss in quality a little, is there anyway I can keep the original quality, as when publishing to Youtube, it gets even poorer quality.
Thanks in advance.

It seems there is an error - as this problem is reported time and time again.
If you have experience of Windows Movie Maker, then you might be able to help - I'm just throwing an idea out there. Do you think, me saving the file to a USB stick, and opening Movie Maker on an XP laptop I may be able to get access to, and publishing from there instead, might solve the issue ?
I don't know a thing about computers really, so I am just throwing ideas about here, in a desperate bid to not have to scrap the whole thing.
Can anyone recommend a free or cheap publishing programme?, and would I be able to open the saved project from Movie Maker on it and simply publish like that, or would I have to start all over again?

The raw video - you didn't move it or anything, did you?
When you look at the movie settings pane what is shown?

No - didn't move it at all.
It plays fine in the preview, and the clips themselves play fine in the Windows Media player. It is only when I publish it, everything is there, but the vid clips.

I tried the USB stick thing idea - but I get an error message saying that 'the movie was created by a version WMM that is not supported.'
Oh well - it was worth a shot, I guess.

I really am not understanding you.
I use a Canon digital camera to record myself singing, which i then sometimes upload to YouTube, but I cannot follow what your problem is.

Have you gone to the MM site and looked at support and/or reinstalled?

I have experienced this before, albeit I did not resolve it, it has something to do with the internal memory manager. It seems it cant render resolutions over a certain size of input, it simply will not stream fast enough. Porting the files to XP will not work well, the version for XP doesn't support some of the codec's of the Vista version. You may want to try using this programme http://download.cnet.com/VirtualDub/3000-2194_4-10184313.htmlIts like most things free.. useable with a lot of hard work. This link might be useful, depending on your workload.. http://download.cnet.com/1770-13631_4-0.html?query=virtual+dub&searchtype=downloads&filter=platform=Windows&filterName=platform=Windows&tag=ltcolAlways use copies of your raw data, not all editing programmes are lossless, meaning they will only record segments from the orginal material without altering it, as opposed to altering the orginal raw material (lossy).
