It will prevent you from rendering quicktime files. I was about to render out a project for a client yesterday, but it wasn't working. I uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime, which didn't fix it. Then I opened 3 other rendering programs and they wouldn't render the quicktime. Then I virus scanned, checked for spyware, and couldn't find anything. I transferred everything to my external hard drive and formatted COMPLETELY. Then I started reinstalling everything. It still wouldn't work. Then I googled Quicktime 7.4. You won't like what you see. From what I read, you can't roll back. http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/01/23/038241"According to numerous posts on Apple's discussion forums (several threads of which have been deleted by Apple), as well as a number of popular video editing blogs, Apple's recent QT 7.4 update does more than just enable iTunes video rentals — it also disables Adobe's professional After Effects video editing software. Attempting to render video files after the update results in a DRM permissions error. Unfortunately, it is not possible to roll back to a previous version of QT without doing a full OSX reinstall. Previous QT updates have also been known to have severe issues with pro video editing apps." It's not just Adobe products, either. It's Sony Vegas, Camtasia, etc.

Thanks for the heads up, Moo. I assume you mean Quicktime 7.4 I just did a couple of quick tests, and apparently this bug is not affecting my set-up. I can still render to and from Quicktime files using Sony Vegas and After Effects. (Windows XP user) Guess I got lucky. Hopefully Apple will release a fix soon.

One note about this update. Also, not disputing the problem moo was having. However, this update is very important for security of your computer system, both MacOS and Windows. The core part of this update is to fix a security bug that affects *every* previous version of Quicktime on both platforms. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307301

I have always upgraded to the latest Media players, especially as the SL Client disables the movie playing without the latest version.
I use Sony Vegas to edit and render our movies and have found no errors after the updates.
As a side note... I spoke with a machinamist recently, who told me they were using a Mac and Mac's do not get any virus's, they were told this by several Mac 'Reps' and so never loaded or used any Virus checkers and or firewalls, nor had they checked their systems for any known adware/maleware/exploits...
I don't know what idiots spread this kind of rubbish about, but at best they are dangerous to the whole community connected to the internet. I downloaded a sample file from this persons system onto a issolated system of ours, ran tests and found several exploits/maleware attached to a simple media file. After I cleanned this file up, it reduced in size by over 60%.
A very simple detection method to see if maleware is attached to any media file is: Load it to a laptop or issolated system that you do not use for distribution of files either to the rest of your system, and or internet. Open the file in QuickTime and play it.. open the inspector window and watch both it and the icons on your desktop. If the inpector window flashes and the desktop icons quiver, then the infection is a simple (but potentially deadly) 8 bit programme compiling itself in the icon cache.

I've been using Macs since the mid 80's, and Mac viruses (virii?) are rare, but they exist (I've got a vague recollection of one from ages ago that plagued the office I worked in). I've always had virus protections on my Macs, and it never seems to find viruses or malware, but it only takes once.

Quicktime 7.4.1 is now available. Hopefully it fixes the problems some people are having with 3rd party rendering. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
