I've seen people having this problem in a few other threads. I can't get mine to work either. The general recommendation is to ditch it anyway and download Fraps.

My experience wiith the SL recorder is that it didn't work for me at all. It DOES work for some people - and one day will work for me, too, however until that day I am using Fraps (a very good program).

Fraps has a free-to-try version, so run over to www.fraps.com and d/l it - then make a snippet and sent it to machinimanight@gmail.com for the collaborative movie we're building now!

Use Fraps

I tried the SL recorder and immedialy junked it in favor of Fraps. At least a dozen people have asked me to help them with problems recording. They are always using that SL recorder. I always tell them to download Fraps. That has always solved the problem.

A funny thing happerned the other day. I installed Taksi just to see what it's like. Later I decided to try the SL video capture again. This time a save-to box and compression box (Taksi-looking) came up and after I set them I made some (soundless) video.

Not funny. Not surprisijng. Taksi is an open-source (free) video capture program, self-described as similar to Fraps. Both programs run in the background and become active when they see you using a graphics program like the SL client. You can read about it at:
http://taksi.sourceforge.net/

I use Fraps and only know Taksi by reputation. I have been happy with other open-source software (Audacity and The Gimp). And Sourceforge, the supplier, has a great rep in Geeksvillle.

Fraps, in the registered version, costs $40. I will continue to use Fraps because I am quite happy with it. But if I were choosing right now, I would probably try Taksi.

Either one, I am sure, is better than the native SL system.

BTW, Osprey, I am not sure why you mentioned that the movie was soundless. In Fraps, you can set it to capture sound or not. My guess is that Taksi has the same option and you had the sound turned off. I always capture sound because can easily suppress it in WMM if I don't want it. Actuallu, I have found that I can also capture Skype audio input along with SL audio..

I mentioned soundlessness as both Taksi and SL do not capture sound. I was thinking (but obviously it didn't come across in my post) that due to its open-source nature Taksi might possibly be what SL is using.

I usually use Fraps. I've been using it for 3 years. No, I didn't have my sound option off on the other program.

I have yet to have Fraps start recording a movie when I used the SL UI menu option to start/stop a movie, especially when it wasn't running. Taksi had been installed days before but wasn't running at the time I mentioned.

So what's YOUR point?

Sorry. I assumed you were evaluating Taksi as a replacement and was commenting on that idea. I was asking about the sound because that would be a point of evaluation doe some people. I see from the current documentation that Taksi does not capture sound. That surprises me a bit.

Now I also understand your surprise at the appearance of Taksi when it was not running. I had assumed that it was running in background (TSR) mode and just waiting for you to press its hotkey. In that scenario, the Taksi programmers would have used the SL menu call as one of the hotkeys.

If Taksi was not running, then the SL client had to make the call itsellf. That would mean that the SL client is already set up to call Taksi. That, in turn, would suggest that you may be on the right track. The client may not be using Taksi now (should not be using it without acknowledgement). But LL may be setting up to switch to it Taksi in a future version of the client.

Did you notice whether Taksi actually loaded when you clicked on the menu item? Have you checked in Win Task Manager to see if Taksi is running when you start the Sl client or when you start vid capture?

Sorry for being dense, but I was thinkng along diffrent lines
