there are 3 ways in which a 'movie' can be delivered over the internet. 1) Download fully then watch. 2) Progressive download (short delay before it starts to play). 3) Quicktime RSTP which is dynamic, meaning as soon as you press Play, you can move to any point in the stream, fast forward, rewind etc. However it is the most hardest to control quality as the stream is constant and must be maintained, and you must use a propriety streaming server with the correct hosting hardware/software (Darwin is the open source code released by Apple, is the most common). Your hosting server needs to be of the correct type (most common servers cannot cope with maintaining such a constant stream), burst download is ineffective and best suited to Progressive downloads.
The average host server available on mass, is unsuitable for 2 & 3, in fact most do not 'encourage' streaming at all, they are offered for 'general hosting', which means web pages and images.
Second Life supports Quicktime (mov) and to a limited degree Flash v3, along with Mpeg. You can use different codex within a Quicktime mov format, such as H.264, Mp4, Mp3 and in some cases Divd, finding the correct version and its settings that suit the movie and the way you wish it to display (unconstraint delivery, throttled at different bandwidths, fast start headers, fast start compressive headers, fully encapsulated 'stand alone file' or seperate file header for referencing bandwith/quality to suit each viewers systems) are but some of the choices you have.
