Lighting a scene in-world

Is there any way of lighting scene in-world the way we do irl? I'm a freelance video producer irl btw.

Forcing the sun and moving it around is useful, but rather limited, especially if a scene requires multiple light sources (like it does irl). I've come across face lights and mouth lights and they're like the SL equivalent of Obies, which is really cool for lighting people and CUs. Are there any SL equivalents for HMIs or Kino Flos?

I totally love SL and am looking forward to shooting my first project; a commercial for a friend's pub. Any and all advice, suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated.

I dont know if this is what you mean, but I was thinking of taking pics that I could take out the background. Easiest thing to do ive seen is make a cube with rounded corners, make the inside all one color, set all surfaces to be full bright, and max out there point light settings, then turn the sun to max to get rid of any shading effects caused from the outside.

You can actually make/buy in game lights for lighting a scene, they can be scripted to change colour and intensity, however I am told there is a maximum of 5 or is it 6, lights per parcel?
One of the neatest I've seen.. and I bought a script somewhere.. that allows you to create a 'phantom' lights, that is operated via a linked prim (touch on and off), the actual light source is 'ghosted' so you only see the ambient light given off. I did use it for a time as a 'snoot' light for closeups but, hey its just another script slowing down SL.

Contact me, I am a light maker in SL and was the first to use light when it was introduced in June of 06 for lighting. Yes it is true you can only see the nerarest 6 local lights. I can explain how they can be used to light a scene. Search for LOC Dezign and Lampz G'lore for some samples of light. The scripts for lighting in SL do not use resources, the lights are client rendered.

Thanks !!

How about if you want to have a sunset sky or a night sky? Is there a way to set the time of day for your location? Seems like you almost might want your own version of the Truman Show's dome to really control things :-)

I shall look you up.

Lag in SL is rarely server side, after all, we are for the most part only retreiving textures and binary numbers from them. The main snarl up from that persepective is packet losses and contention ratios on everyones connections to the Internet. My point was, anything 'additional' that causes your clientside software to work harder (and those that share the same space ingame) is what I truly term lag. I have seen many 'experts' stating how to make SL lag less, statements like 'turn down your bandwidth and reduce your cache' or the opposite experts 'turn up full your bandwidth but keep your cache small' are at best causing confusion and havoc. If many people treated their cars the same way they treat their computers, they should always keep the telephone numbers of good taxi (cab) companies to hand. Even though I have used computers for well over 20 years, I do not consider myself a 'mechanic' but all my systems run as smoothly as possible with the regular maintainence I do to them. Perhaps I may write up a post, but fear I will then be labelled 'just another expert' ;)
