Hi,

Excuse me if this is the wrong forum - hope someone will move it to the appropriate one if so.

I have converted a movie to mpeg4. It plays fine in QuickTime standalone on my PC, but once it's uploaded to my server and I'm trying to stream it in SL, I just have a black screen on the TV.

What could be causing this and how do I fix it?

Rgds,
Lyn

When playing directly from a webhost, your system can handle a greater stream data bit rate, than when running alongside the SL client.
Try setting the movie to progressively download (download and watch) at a data bit rate of less than 100kbps. Also, running from a website using a browser, this may use ActiveX controllers to render the movie, which are not present in the SL Client (i.e. as a poster movie).. as you are getting a black screen, it means that the ports or open for the stream and the Client is waiting to render the data. Check you have a url pointing directly at a media file, and not some html page.
When watching movies/media in SL, lower your bandwidth setting in the Network Tab, once everything is rezzed around you, to say 1/3rd of your actual bandwidth (asuming you have enough capacity to begin with), this will allow the media to stream alongside the SL client stream.

If you want to test your setup, in our showroom there are numerous media streams running, all at less than 100kbps, feel free to pop over and see them and use them as a benchmark for your ingame settings. WBA-Advertising.

When you say you converted the movies to mpeg4.... do you mean you used a mp4 codex within the MOV wrapper format? The result would be a .mov extention file, encapsulating the mp4 codex?
SL's client cannot always render media of certain file types, even though it uses the QT pluggin. For instance, although QT can handle flash files, in the SL QT pluggin, it will only handle upto version 3 and no action scripts.
