During a shoot where we track an avatar around a SIM the camera tracking (using the alt enter) would track the avatar for a certain distance and then stop..and the avatar appears to disappear.

We are able to track an avatar all over the sim with the official release viewer though... which is a bummer because the picture is not near as nice.

Interesting, good question. LL has made quite a few adjustments to LOD (Level of Detail) handling in Windlight, I wonder if this is one side-effect? If I were you I would also post a question about this over in the "First Look Viewer" section of the forums, a lot of Windlight users are posting issues over there. This isn't misposted, but you might get different feedback in the two places ... maybe there's a slider adjustment that can help?

I'll be reading with interest to see what more knowledgable folks have to say!

have you checked to see if you've disabled the camera constraints in the debug menu?

I believe the limitation is 512 mtrs, whereby the camera 'looses interest'. You might try FilmPath for what you want to achieve. Geuis can help you with that one.
