Computer issues

hey guys!

I shot a project the other day and luckily I got all the shots I needed + way more extras since it was long event, but I had a LOT of issues. First of all, everytime I would try to put the screen at 1280 by 720 resolution with animo-strophic filtering, the client would just CRASH.

Of course, I had my settings at high (but kept hte draw distance relatively low), and there were maybe 25-30 avatars there, and turned on animo-strophic. IT just kept crashing!! I had to resort to turning off animo-strophic and shooting at 1440 by 850 which sucks because i wanted native HD-- GRRRRRR. now I'll have to convert it.

I have a nvidia 8600. 256 on it. Memory is 2 gigs of ram. It's a new and GOOD computer. I blew a grand on it. I want to know I can shoot live events with lots of avatars without all this crashing.

And finally when I downloaded the regular second life client (i was on the release candidate), it stopped crashing but everytime i used joystick flycam it would jerk around, the frame rate would go to 0 then to 15 , then to 20 , then to 3!! it kept jerking- never was still.

finally.. i relogged and came back on.. and it seems to be working normal, it jerked every once in a while but it was much better, but it only gave me around 13-14 FPS.

Now I want to get more RAM- but someone told me SL can only use 2 gigs of ram and that's what I have- should i waste the money?

What should I do?? Help!

btw I already set my texture memory to 256, that's what my PC's graphics card can handle. Thanks AWM for that tip!!

Hi,
I have been looking at what the Client has been doing of late. One thing I've noticed is the Agent update times have been jumping between 2-30 seconds. Also lots of warnings about bad hosted textures. Despite clearing cache and rebooting, this doesn't go away.
I've also tried completely deleting all the folders related to SL and reinstalling with no avail.

Tried the new RC client with its long list of bug fixes, but there are still issues. Camera bounce seems to have increased. I can only assume, until told otherwise, SL is perhaps loosing track of where your Avatar and your camera are located. The spaz camera effect when you get stuck close to a prim/wall was supposed to have been fixed.

I have reported the Camera appearing to attach to the outer facets of a hollowed prim when you Alt Zoom about. That is on the 'Fixed' list for the RC but, when I tested it, it is not.

Its not so much whether SL can handle 2gb ram, XP can handle 3-4gb ram. If you want to upgrade to greater ram, you might like to explore using a Ram Disc, maybe to hold the SL cache, or even as a capture device. Some of the memory leaks have been moved to the GC ram as well as main memory.

With regard to screen capture resolutions, get a copy of HyperCam. It allows you to 'draw' a capture region on the screen, so no more worrying about that issue

Interesting! Wow.. I noticed ALL of those issues- the alt zoom, the bounces, the spaz effect when too close to a wall. And was juggling with all three for the shoot. Live shoots are so difficult sometimes. I wish I can opt out of those completely- but some are too good an opportunity to pass.

Thanks AWM!

I think I'll try updating my ram. Definitely will try looking into the ram disk. I wish I had gotten those faster raid drives now!

Also, set your texture mem to half of what your graphics card is .. so 128 for you. Set multiple threads in advanced (so the load is between both cpu's).

I use a ramdisk at times.

A lot of the issues you were having with textures, may well have been from asset server burps we have been having...

I'm a very dissatisfied SL customer right now!!

Anyways- 128? I was told 256 by two people. What is better? I've been setting it at 256- still having problems. It seems I have problems regardless of what I set it out.

I'm hoping the new RC is better--- my last filming experience felt like i poured gasoline on myself, lit myself on fire, and ran around. VERY DISSATISFYING!

I want my money back for Second Life ;)
But instead I'm just gonna spend a lot of money on pimping out my PC.

Turnning off animo-strophic filtering will help the situation.

Try altering the UI scale to get greater resolution.

I can't go into every permutation of setting using the nVidia control panel, but work your way through them, save it as a template.
