Anyone have suggestions on how to do character generating? such as scrolling text accross the bottom of the video or posting an avatars name while you are interviewing him/her?

That has to be done in post production, not while filming. A common feature of non linear suites like Adobe Premiere and Finalcut

you could make a hud script that scrolls text repeating what was said i wouldent use float text use xytext prims ~LW

Maybe, you could use a texture swapping script, that would change the text on a prim that could be worn and positioned by the interviewee or interviewer. Only real drawbacks are: would look unprofessional, lag may not rez the textures if too big or swapped too fast, as the interviewer/interviewee turned it would go out of view.
Post production is best and covered by the vast majority of editors.
