Oi to the seasoned crowd !
I'm working on another Second Life machinima project, and I'm just curious as to the communities options when it comes to camera controls. The in game panning tools, with the exception of the zooms, move too quickly to be of any use unless reduced to 50% of their panning speed during editing. Also, any custom or stylized panning I've done in the past has been managed through minimal mouselook speed and smoothing, but it's still subject to the steadiness of one's hand on the mouse.
Is there a HUD that allows you to set up pan points, complete with a speed setting, that will cycle through with even pace ? Is there provided functionality within the game that I'm unaware of ? I've been playing with the advanced option's record and playback features, but I don't want my character moving around, just the camera position.
Any help is greatly appreciated !

Re slowing the camera: We used to have that function in Preferences, but it was removed. It is missed as it was useful. In debug setting there is "CameraPositionSmoothing" but it doesn't seem to me to do anything.
There are various camera objects like FilmingPath (I think it's still around). As for hardware, I use a Space Navigator, which I find a good tool.

I know of people (scriptors) that can create a camera control system. The freebie one out there is somewhat limiting, and very old. FilmPath does what it says on the tin, allowing you to preprogramme the camera view, and even to the extent of keeping the camera focused to avatars as they move about the scene, whilst the camera itself is also moving/panning etc.
Using scripts to control anything will always come down to 'how smooth is SL'. Physical objects that use scripts are never smooth.

I use "zoomtime" in debug settings. Try playing with the Zoomtime setting it at 10, 20, 35, and 50. By using "Alt," "Ctrl+Alt," and "Ctrl+Shift+Alt" you can slow zoom, rotate, and pan your view. ETA.... This vid was made with a zoomtime of 35.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxmdHHlvU7k This vid uses several zoomtime settings (the audio sux don't click on the remastered one because I rendered it letter boxed before i got comfortable using SonyVegas9 ) .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8DbA_wgORA

Thanks, Rafe - when the camera controls left Preferences I never investigated debug to see what was available, so I'm glad you did.

I wasn't to concerned about dynamic panning or preconfigured camera angels .. just a way to slow down the bloody default camera options provided in game. Thank you very much !

Thank you very much ! I'm glad that its of help Ospry, I was looking at getting the Space Navigator for SL but decided not to because of both the price and it being a new technology at the time. You mentioned it so I assume you're happy with it. Maybe I'll take another look.

I've been using it for quite a long time (since the time we had to get user-made drivers off their forum to make it work) and I like it very much, although it does take some getting used to. I adjust it constantly, instead of having one setting I use all the time.
