Is there a way when using machinima to remove the avi's names above their heads during filming? I'm on a Mac using iShowU for screen capture and I have not been able to figure out a way to remove the names while filming or if this is even possible. Any assistance soon would be helpful.

Thanks,
Toni

There's an SL viewer option in Preferences to show the names over people. Not sure where exactly it is but think it's pretty easy to spot, once you know it's in there.

Preferences only works for you.

Meade, thank you for your reply but, preferences only works to not display your name to others but, avi names will always show and not sure if there is an advanced setting to stop this or UI adjustment during movie shooting to stop it.

Maybe I don't understand what you're looking for but you can't prevent other people from seeing your name, if they want to. The preferences option _only_ controls what you see on your screen.

I'd give it a try, if you haven't yet. I think it's what you're looking for. (unless I'm totally confused, which is entirely possible)

Avi names show no matter what your setting is in preferences
08-04-2008 12:21
Under preferences you can only set not show group name or not show avi name. I'm filming 10 other avi's and I don't want their names to appear above their heads while I'm filming them. Is there a setting to disable me from seeing other Avi's names above theri heads so when I'm filming their names won't show in the movie. I have not found a setting to not show the names of other avi's is that true or not? Tried this last night no luck and had to film with avi names above everyones heads.

Under preferences you can only set not show group name or not show avi name.

I would do both of those. To me, that sounds exactly like what you're looking for.

edit: see also http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Machinima , which says you can press ctrl-alt-F1 to hide all the UI stuff. That might be a better option..

Thanks ctrl-alt-1 isn't working
08-04-2008 12:45
Meade thanks again but, the ctrl-alt-1 is shown not working in another blog here and I haven't been able to get to work. If this worked I probably wouldn't be here. I appreciate your response but, I haven't found success with anyone using that UI choice so I'm still stuck.

Done. Made an adjustment on my Mac for the F1 key and CTRL ALT F1 did the trick you saved me a ton of editing and bad filming. Thanks for sticking with me. Look me up anytime if you need anything. Thanks Meade!!!!!

The "Show Names" options are in a drop down list in Preferences, General tab:

At least that's what I see in Second Life 1.20.15 (92456) on my Windows system.

From: someone
Show Names

* Never - Hides the names of other avatars.
* Show Temporarily - Displays avatar names briefly, then they disappear.
* Always - Avatar names will always be displayed over their heads.

Hide My Name On My Screen - Select this to prevent your own name from appearing over your head, regardless of your Show Names setting. Other Residents will see your name based on their own personal settings.

Hide My Group Title - Select this to hide the title of your active group (selected from Edit menu > Groups) from yourself and other Residents.

Hide All Group Titles - Select this to hide all group titles from view and narrow name tag.

Show titles: Hide all titles:

Small Avatar Names - Select this to show avatar names in a smaller font size.

Just for the record, the interface is covered quite well in the knowledge base. I think it has screenshots of all the major dialog boxes and explanations of all the options.

Unfortunately, for some reason I can't grasp, they've done the page in such a way that links that I try to post to it don't work.
