I was watching some good video editing tutorials on YouTube
and one of better ones was from a person who participates
in AMV (animated music videos) contests. I had never heard
of AMVs before; in this context they are music videos which
are created with bits of edited anime video.

This person who made the tutorial listed a few videos which
are considered the best of their class and the URL below points
to one of the most remarkable in terms of how many edits
there are; and also holding to a theme set by the music
(Foo Fighter's Best of You):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl48UzWcKrI

Apparently the 4+ minute clip comprises clips from over
190 anime's.

This work is an inspiration for me in regard to machinima
film editing.

I'm going back inworld and do some filming!

Agreed it is an inspiration, excellent composition, editing etc etc... I wonder how they would fair just using the SL platform for content creation? That for me is the greater challenge. One day....................... one day...............

I think that considering the content is video clips of anime, I think
the editor would be able to do just as good a job. His or her talent
as I see it is project management.

Btw, for anyone checking this out; the video editing wonderfulness
doesn't kick until after 1 minute in...and get's progressively intense.

I tend to make machinima with long takes; mostly because I'm
lazy and want to see quick results. This video shows me the
value of using lots and lots of small clips. More work but better
result. Of course it depends on the project.

Oh...I just found the artist's comment about the video which
I also think is interesting: all machninographers should have
a story behind their work:

"It's very difficult to comment on this video. The idea isn't really
original, it's the same theme of the song, same theme of the
original music video.

It's a video about life in general, a confession about life, full of
passion, rage, deception, determination, desire to fight, desire
to give up. A complete theme, without judgment, just a
backward step on the life, nothing else. Some people said me
this video is really pessimistic, others said the message is
very hopeful. I'm glad this video bring this ambiguity. Like
in the real music video, I have put neutral scenes and elements,
without explanation or reason... I love it. I have inset also
real scenes of the Foo Fighters' singer to keep the side of a
real music video.

Hmm I can't successfully talk about this video, it's a feeling
I can't explain correctly, watch it, explanations aren't necessary
for this one ; I hope you enjoy it."

Well that story is way too deep for me... I didn't even feel a twinge of that watching the movie.. a story should come from the movie, not be explained... thats like having to explain your jokes...

Using the relatively lifeless animation restrictions of the SL platform and creating emotions such as joy, laughter, sadness etc is a real challenge to the still life photographer and machinimist alike. It's a challenge I rise to aspire to. Anyone who acheives levels of that is to be applauded.

I disagree. Personally I benefit from hearing what an artist has to say about his or her work. And I definitely enjoy commentaries that accompany DVD movies, especially if the commentary is delivered by the director.

While I understand your point of letting a movie speak for itself, even
the great Kubrick was willing to do some explaining about 2001:

And this interview Kubrick gave to Playboy about 2001:

Creative Explanations

I have to say that there is merit in both sides. There is no point making a video that is totally impenetrable that no one understands it (/me shudders at the thought of ever watching Eraserhead again) but I always appreciate hearing a creator explain their work as it helps me unlock my own creative side.

With the viseo that started this, I’ll be honest and say I didn’t get a feel that there was a wider narrative being conveyed, but rather that it was telling an emotional story that could be interpreted in many ways. I liked it. And I’m no foo-figthers fan :)

For me, a Director/Editor can tell a story in their work, but it is each viewer that takes something of themselves and puts that into the movie at some point. A reinterpretation if you want. Most sad or love stories are universal but each tells a story in a different way, which each viewer perhaps relates to. On a different track, if you listen to the comedian Billy Connely, he is hilarious as he unravels stories about his own life that make us laugh, not because we were there, but we can perhaps relate to.

How many of us can remember our parents asking us if 'we wanted another smack/hiding? ' but when someone else tells us a story with that included, it is the relationship of the statement and the recolection, not the black and white statement, after all, it's ilogical that the answer would be anything other than no, so therefore not funny in iteself.

I never listen to the commentary of 2001, I did however enjoy and interpret the movie myself.

I do not disagree with what you say, each to his/her own. I just don't think it's important.
