Very easy. They use UTF-8 fonts and Microsoft IME.
I thought it was impossible until somebody let me know about it. |

And if on a Mac, the Japanese character palette built into OSX and UTF-8. -_^

On a Microsoft platform, install Japanese language support (this should come in XP or the Windows Update), Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) (same here) and download the UTF-8 fonts (do a search).
For Mac, follow Jesrad Seraph's advice. |

Hmm, Seagel... I have Japanese support installed on my XP setup, and I can see the Japanese characters in the other threads here just fine (even though my encoding is set to Western), but yours are showing up as random Latin-set characters. I tried switching my browser to Unicode, and it looked like all your kana and 1 kanji showed up, but some of your characters were still having problems displaying. None of the 3 available Japanese encodings fared any better. Have you tried viewing (or having a friend view) your post on another (Japanese-setup) computer that you haven't installed anything special on? Edit: This is a test. はじめまして。 私は「ビートフォックス」です。 どうぞよろしく。 (typed using the language toolbar that comes with the Microsoft IME) _____________________

Romanji? It is clumsy though.
How easy is it to switch back and forth? Can I switch easy between Nihongo to Eigo? I have freinds in both languages. |

It is very easy to switch back and forth. Usually just a single keystroke. If you run SL in windowed mode, there's also a menu for selecting the current input method (for a Mac, it's in the menu bar, and for Windows XP it's in the "language bar", which can be either a little floating window or docked into the taskbar.
This is for the standard OS input methods. Other input methods (such as ATOK, which is very nice) may have different or additional UIs. (ohh, just noticed that ATOK 2005 for MacOS X is now available. must buy. I wonder if there's a US dealer, or if I will have to order it from Japan... T-Zone has closed their US shop ![]() ![]() |

Once you install the Unicode version of the Arial font; you can use any character it supports (which turns out to be 20k+ characters). SL has an almost complete implementation of UTF-8

こんにちは、よろしくお願いします。ムネです。
I'm having trouble getting Japanese text to work in game. I'm using WinXP, and often use the language bar to switch to Japanese to type in emails etc .. but when I try to use Japanese input in SL it comes up on the top left of screen in kana, then if I hit enter it comes into SL as *'s. I read that WinXP comes with the UTF-8 font .. or is the one we use in SL different? |

You need "arialuni.ttf" font. Mcrosoft has quitted to distribute it by itself for a long time. But you might find it in the net by using Google serach. Good luck.

easy, if u r using win xp, simply go to Control Pannel-->Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options-->Regional and Language Options-->Languages-->Text Service & Input Languages-->Details, Then Add "Japanese IME Standard 2002", and Switch your input method to Japanese, that's it!

I read that WinXP comes with the UTF-8 font .. or is the one we use in SL different? It doesn't come with the correct font. To get the font, you have to install MS Office. They used to offer it for free, but one day they just stopped offering it. The free version is still around the net, google ARIALUNI.TTF (as mentioned in another reply) ^.^ |

The free version is still around the net, google ARIALUNI.TTF (as mentioned in another reply) ^.^ I had a very hard time finding this font on Google... Turns out I was looking for the wrong thing. Sorry if this has been posted already, maybe someone will find this information helpful ^_^ Windows users: You should install this font by using the file "Aruniupd.exe" (searching for the ARIALUNI.TTF is somewhat futile). This can be easily found on Google. Here is a link to the file on sourceforge (a very large and well-trusted trusted download site): http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=vietunicode&filename=Aruniupd.exe&use_mirror=easynews No reboot was necessary for me, but i did have to close and re-open SL. Just download and run (approx 15 megabytes ~2 minutes high speed, ~15 minutes dial-up) |
