My apologies for the breach in etiquette

Not more than an hour ago I hosted an event. Prior to this event I sent two notes to a bunch of my online friends and now realize that I was spamming. I truly apologize for this breach in etiquette.

I also (now) know that when I do this, I'm opening up a Conference. I did not mean to just open up a conference and leave. Frankly, I didn't know what I was doing until one of you offended individuals alerted me to it.

Anyway, I won't ever every do it again - scout's honor. :) I'm truly sorry for the newbie-error; I was rushed, I was thoughtless and I was inconsiderate. For the next week you may smack me in the face with a wet noodle, make me wear a dunce cap and dunk me in a vat of New Coke.

Heh. Personally, the annoying bit isn't when you go 'such and such is starting now, thanks. Bye.', but when the other God-knows-how-many indignant responses of 'WTF?! Sniper spam?! Take me off this list NOW!' follow it.

Goodwrench is good people. No crucifying the nice man, you lot. Save it for someone you can really get your teeth into.

Heh. Thanks for the kind words, Kris. I had a *blast* meeting you the other day... best lunch time break I've had in some time.

The funny (and confusing) thing is that I got a comment last week to not send messages and I thought... what do you mean, don't send messages?

I now realize that what he was referring to was not to send any blanket IM's to people because it opens up that damned conference window.

When I thought about it more I thought: Damn, I just sent two of those irritating conference IM's within 45 minutes of one another, ducking out right after the note.... I just didn't realize that a an IM like that was opening a window with everyone in the damned chat-window.

I'd be pretty ticked off too, people. I don't remember exactly who deleted my calling cards, but I again apologize to all of you. I KNOW one of the people I ticked off was Hank Ramos. Sorry Hank, I didn't mean to irritate some of the core of our community. :D

Oh, and by all means, you may digitally *slap* me. :)

I deleted it too...I had been getting several of these messages because I'm in both of the Therian groups (Therians seem to spam a lot :-(, I'd drop the groups if I didn't like the founders so much) on the day that you did your group IMs and I had just had it. I IMed you about the effect what you were doing was causing and deleted your card.

I regret having deleted your card and I hope to run into you in world and exchange new ones, sorry for my fit of pique.

Consider it forgotten. One I realized what I'd done I was pretty irritated. But mistakes happen and a lesson was learned. Just like an afterschool special. :D

Could you clarify the steps that resulted in "opening a conference?" I wasn't clear on what you did that caused the conference to occur. Did you drop the same notecard on a bunch of people? Just want to be sure I understand so that I can avoid making the same mistake.

What I did was try to send (what I thought was) a note to my online contacts. In my ignorance, I did not realize that it wasn't one of those mostly unobtrusive blue windows that popped up, but rather an IM conference just like when you want to talk to all online members of a group.

:) Hope my error can keep you from making one of your own. :D

Short of using a script, I don't even know how to open those little blue windows....

But regardless, I don't think you have that much to worry about. People that get THAT worked up over it need to chill out and remember - there aren't that many ways to contact game buddies; the IM tool is really the only way to do it reliably.

Now what annoys me is the constant "xxx is online" messages. I know I can probably turn it off, but I'm not exactly sure where.

No kidding! The online/offlines have turned into some demonic flipbook in my lower-right corner!

You can disable the online/offline messages by going to File > Preferences and unchecking "Print Online Notifications" under the General tab.

I must have done this early upon joining SL because I had completely forgot about it and kept wondering how my SL partner knew the moment I was online.
