Hi everyone,

I and my SL partner have been affected by the land extortion scheme, a person (who will remain nameless) bought a 1024sqm plot net to ours and is asking L$25k for it while displaying those lovely signs. We have had to close our Slingo club and no matter where your views are on that game we were offering a place for people to visit and have fun.

We have contacted the Lindens and Live Help and while one Linden offered some good advice the other just said they were aware of the situation and file a report. Helpful.

I can't see that we will achieve anything by talking in this forum, we need to take action as a group of people to get LL to listen. I don't propose to know what that action is but I'm opening up the debate to see what we as a community of affected residents can come up with.

1000 voices must carry more weight than just filing Abuse Reports

I may get myself banned for this (no doubt inciting something or other) but what the hell!

Lee, liquidate your land dwon to $0 tier. Try to make sure the purchaser has tier room to spare so the result is a net loss of $ to LL. Make sure to inform LL of what you are doing and why. 1000 former landowners will get LL's attention.

Or...how about we just all boycott buying the impeach Bush land? Put walls up around the offenders land and completely block them in their own plots and let them pay tier over and over and over again. Eventually either a)they'll get tired of paying tier b)realize they're no longer causing the grief they wanna cause or c)Bush will no longer be President (he only has a few more years).

If one wanted to try to put more pressure on LL about the problem of now view control, one could get free webspace at sites like Geocities and use it to provide pictures and an explanation to the effect the Second Life is no longer worth spending money on and advising people not to spend any money on it.

One could post messages in the Usenet newsgroups also describing the problem and advising people that owing to lack of view control you can't expect to get your money's worth out of Second Life and thus should look elsewhere for a place to spend your money, including links to the web pages you have created.

One could check out places that have provided online coverage about SL, and if they have any way to provide feedback from readers, take advantage of that to describe the problems caused by lack of view control. There should be a list of press coverage about SL on the Second Life site.

One can try to contact the authors of any of the online SL stories or the editors of the publications in which they appeared and see if they might want to do a followup story with a nice headline like "Second Life: the End of the Dream" and such.

As to whether attempts to influence Linden Lab in ways like this would have any effect I have no idea

I'd love to just see someone buy all the land around an impeach bush sign area (hell, it'd be cheaper than the extortion land) and just build big walls, banning Lazerus from this land.

Even better if the land then proceeded to sell Peach Bushes.

Maybe we should litter SL with "No RL Politics in SL" signs.

We could get "embedded journalist"¹ Hamlet Linden to write an ill-researched article in New World Notes "interviewing" Mr. Signage echoing his self-serving justification that this is an act of patriotic political speech and not an ill-spirited game to make SL visually unpleasant.

Oh, this wasn't a trick question? What can we do? Whine about it. :(

¹ the phrase "embedded journalist" when used here means "marketing wonk who gets paid by LL to pretend that he is a) a journalist and b) editorially independent from LL's marketing department"

Noone's figured out how to hurt this person. When someone figures out how to hurt him, the residency will have a weapon. Until then, he'll continue to terrorize the world with the Lindens' blessing.

In the end this is what we did and here's how to do it without getting yourself into trouble with LL;

1) Build the box around the land
2) Set the inside of the box (the other persons land) to transparent
3) Set the walls of the box to Phantom
4) Texture as appropriate
5) Ban the person from your land - just to cause them hassle!

I know this won't work for everyone but it may help some people. Yes you do have to live with a box for a while but nobody can see those signs which I think is an improvement, we also found the signs gone very quickly and are now talking reasonably with the person in question!

Thanks to everyone so far

If you genuinely own the land completely surrounding his on all four sides and you banned him from your land he can AR you and the Lindens WILL intervene. It's one of the only things they are consistent about - you are not allowed to deny someone access to their land on the mainland. And before you argue that he could get to it by flying above the restriction zone, that won't hold any water with the Lindens. So if this is your recipe for not getting in trouble with LL, think again.

That's disgusting. If I want to ban someone from my land I should be entitled to do so, it's like a basic right in SL.
Besides, if they want to get there they can now direct TP to it.

One could argue that ensuring unblocked access to your 4 by 4 m parcel bends the spirit of "access limitations as grief" but then again, one could make the same type of argument regarding Mr. Impeach. Strike that, people have made the same argument to no avail.

I've not dropped one on all of you, but many of you already have a note card from me regarding Land Extortion...

Let me know your thoughts...it's a copy from a post I made in Land and the economy I think...

Happy Stipend Day!

Apparently that worked quite well for Sansarya Caligari and her friends...when the bush signs came to town...
