I have been in SL for a little while, and there are many things that I do not know still. I have few friends that help, be they are not always online when I am. I too had to learn the hard way like you. SL has a help feature in the menu, the very last tab, scroll down and its there when in world.
I saw that release land button like you did on my second land purchase, but got help from the help system before I pressed it. You might want to try that system if you have any in world questions. I did, and I am happy that I did.
