Have you used or seen used words/phrases/expressions that seem unique to SL, or at least, apparently began with this game? I'm thinking of compiling a list, if we have enough to warrant one.
So far, I'm pretty sure "rez", meaning, "to create a 3D object on the spot" is an SL-only word.
Any others?

Well, I think the term 'the Lindens' is pretty much SL-Only. Trying to think of some others.

Well, it all depends on what you mean by SL specific, I suppose.
I always took "rez" to be "resurrect", which is certainly not unique to SL, but it's meaning would be.
I think "1st Life" would qualify, however.
If we include words which are just re-used in SL with new meaning, the list grows extensively...

I know this is suppose to be for residents but I couldn't resist - the use of Shebang as a verb meaning using dial up connection as in - "if I can't find a DSL connection I'll be Shebanging it"

Speaking of Shebang...
Our own Shebang was working on a SLeek code. Not sure if that will return or if its a dead project. #!? Please chime in.

I'll second "rez", which I was told means the same as "render".
Is it a generally used 3D-VR term which I have never noticed?
I generally avoid slang that doesn't offer some value-add, like significantly shorter or easier to spell.... not sure "rez" qualifies on either score.

"Rez" comes from Tron, which I was told by a Linden in a separate thread. However, as far as gaming terms goes, it is SL-only. Plus I doubt anyone ever uses the word in a real conversation even after hearing it used on Tron. Hamlet I was going to make an SL dictionary and was going to make this very thread, so good job in beating me to it So far I have: Rez, Shebanging, Linden (used in GM fashion), SL, FL (rather than the usual RL), Physical (defined as: somthing which acts as though it were real), Sim (defined as: an area of land), and finally Hamlet (defined as: Second Life reporter).

"Sim" for a 256x256 plot of SL land, with certain technical and behavioral properties. Yes, yes, I know it's short for Simulator, but that's in internal detail somehow lost on non-technical n00bs. Oracle Omega

From: someone Originally posted by Oracle Omega "Sim" for a 256x256 plot of SL land, with certain technical and behavioral properties. I've always wondered about that: is it really 256x256? It makes sense, of course, but then why do I see both 0 and 256 while flying around? That seems to make it 257x257, which makes no sense whatsoever.

Maybe the client rounds? so [0.0, 0.5) -> 0 and [255.5, 256) -> 256 Also, on topic, "av" as an abbvr. for Avatar is not something I have seen elsewhere (of course, I don't get out much). Also also, "slime" has some ominous SL-only connotations for old timers.

Oracle Omega I said that I believe it does count, because it is defined separately from its other uses. As for "slime", all I can think of are the slimes that would follow your avatar around when you rez'd them. It was like having a Pokemon, cuz you were supposed to spread them all over the world

It was like having a Pokemon, cuz you were supposed to spread them all over the world Yeah, baq in da day (January), right around when I got accepted in to the beta, someone made a cute green slime that would follow you around and make squeaky noises once in a while. Now this was back when a) anit-griefing tools weren't as sophisticated b) everyone was much more easily impressed c) scripts could play sounds at a volume that would carry sim-wide. This led to a Plague Of Slimes, people would rez a slime, then slimes would often get lost and just sit around squeaking. Time was you couldn't go anywhere in SL without hearing a pittiful *wheeze* *squeak* every 2 minutes. Humm, something for the beta time capsule perhaps?

I took a copy of a "Wild Slime Follow Drone" when I first encountered one, and it's still in my inventory. It was when I was experimenting with it later that I encountered the "script won't stop running" bug. I commented out most the code and cleared the running checkbox, and the thing still followed me around. At the time I was new to SL, so I wondered if this might be by design; maybe certain script commands spawned an unkillable process. I showed it to Nada, who told me, no, it was a bug.

rez - (v) - [origin: the movie Tron. Derived from "de-rez" - a fictional hacker term for an object losing resolution, or dissolving away.] - to create an object or to bring an object out of your inventory. To make something appear in the world.
This is the current definition in the upcoming Second Life Glossary by Turtlemoon Publishing.

I'm actually surprised by the LACK of SL jargon/slang. Coming from EQ, where EVERYTHING is abbreviated. "Come on man, we're doing MB in PoI today, how come you're LFG? Emarr has a real lack of uber SKs and I've got SoS waiting for me on an alt in the bazaar." ... Shebanging? What's that, nodding off constantly?
I propose we somehow shorten every sim name down to three letters. So Natoma becomes Nat, Gibson becomes Gib, and so on. And to mix it up, De Haro would become CDH (Camp De Haro).
In addition, we should use MUVIE to describe the sort of game SL is. Multi-User Virtual Interactive Experience.
Since... Lifer: Second Life Player
It follows to have... lifing (note spelling): Playing second life. And generally make anything else that a newbie could understand incomprehensible. This would go a long way to establishing street cred with the geeks.

Personally, I rather enjoy that SL doesn't have much unique jargon. It makes explaining things to new users much easier, for one thing.

Heh, some jargon I use that most people seem to understand... autofly(ing) - using the Go button on the Map Tracker
autologout - when the system kicks you out after 30 mins inactivity
tp, tport - short for teleporting, though I may have been using this back in my ActiveWorlds days
lag whore - those things that servers turn into
And some I know other people than myself use... the grid - our collection of sims/servers/regions
deep-think - what happens when too many people stand up at the same time in a sim
off-world - objects that go awry do this
black hole - avs that go awry do this
(non-)stitched - whether a sim is attached to the grid or not
ts - teamspeak, for voice chat
I'm sure I have more, just not off the top of my head right now.
