Initial details here. We still haven't officially nailed down the date, though it will likely be January 18th, Wednesday, 5pm SLT. (Will update if this changes, of course.)

The book he'll be discussing, Free Culture, is available, well, for free, here, and at better bookstores worldwide. When/if we can get Larry's consent, we're hoping to have an SL edition available in the weeks before the event.

To reserve a spot at the event, join the group "Free Culture".

More details after New Year's. Meantime, please join Free Culture to discuss his ideas with others in-world, or do so here, in this topic.

I'll give you a topic: does Second Life's success thus far prove his theories correct?

Contradiction

SL's success actually contradicts Lessig's thesis. Lessig is founder of the Creative Commons movement, which encourages free sharing of information and designs, similar to open source software. In SL the most successful designs and designers tend to be the ones who protect their content. Most objects and patterns are sold without full mod/copy rights, and successful, widely used open-source designs are rather rare. I'd even suggest that free designs have a reputation for being "cheap" and low quality. It will be interesting to hear Lessig's response to these trends in SL but please don't give him the impression that sharing designs and letting others build on your work is the norm here.

It's been fixed. The group Free Culture is now open for joining, find it in-world by clicking the Find button > Groups tab, and searching for it. Just click "Join Now" and you're all set.

New reading assignment!

Professor Lessig is rewriting his classic book Code and specifically requested that Second Life Residents comment on a pertinent section of it, when he appears in mid-January:

http://codebook.jot.com/Book/Chapter2/Ch2Part1

He's referring to the section called "Borders", just a few pages. Check it out, discuss!

In general? Maybe. I'm thinking of Beryl Greenacre's cherry tree (correct copy) which there are a bazillion of all over second life.

Reservations have reached full capacity (100+!) and so group membership has been closed. Check this forum topic or my blog for announcements on attending the event remotely-- either via a "repeater" area, where the conversation is re-broadcast, or at selected sites that'll (hopefully) stream an audio stream "play by play" as it happens. All participants will have a chance to ask questions of Lessig and (space permitting) get copies of his book signed. In any case, an edited transcript of the conversation will be blogged here the following week.

Illustrated transcript to yesterday's event begins here and will continue over the next few days. Thanks to everyone who came and listened, it was a great event, and Professor Lessig said he had a great time. I'm pretty sure we can bring him back fairly soon. :)

Just so you know, I was listening and trying to send a clarification to my question via IM. Guess it didn't make it through. Bummer that.

Who wants to become an officer of Free Culture to run Lessig-oriented events/ fundraisers/etc, including those potentially involving Professor Lessig himself? There's room for up to ten officers, so far four members of Free Culture have expressed interest. IM or e-mail me if you want to nominate yourself (or nominate another FC member.)

The Free Culture group now has its own Forum-- come on over an introduce yourself! As folks who've gone to the last few FC events in-world, we have folks from Creative Commons and Freeculture.org involved, along with an impressively diverse, talented range of folks.
