Inspired by today's entry.

When's the last time you've seen an object or heard a sound or watched an avatar do something odd-- but nobody else could see/hear/witness the same thing? Post examples here!

The most common reality breakdown I've experienced with others is the ghost. This is when someone appears to be there even after they've left the area or logged off.

Last Sunday after the physics workshops Kanker and I were talking, but he occasionally would address a comment to someone else, and I would look around, not seeing anybody. Finally Kanker said, "It's spooky to be talking here with a silent figure lurking there in the dark, wearing just swim trunks." I forget the name, but the person he was talking to had logged off half an hour before!

Another good example of this sort of breakdown occurred at the space launch of Darwin and Radium. I acted as a communications relay on that event and continued to post pictures of what Radium was seeing to the slide show, as it went along. But after a while I started getting a few people in the audience accusing us of making the whole thing up! One even gave me a picture showing a space-suited figure continuously falling while on the runway!

SL may have some good ghost stories to tell come Halloween!

I see this happen quite a bit with objects, usually ones set physical.

Just last night I was messing about with the Marimbal in Rose and two of the note balls collided then started a slow drift in a straight line away from the Marimball.

I waited for 5 seconds to see if they would auto-die as they are supposed to, but they didn't, so I jumped to edit mode and targeted each to null their velocity. They both sat there happily spinning. I couldn't delete them... A sure sign that a prim has gone rouge.

Later, Haney Linden came by and he couldn't see them, even when I jumped down into the Marimball field and stood so that my head was embedded in a rouge ball.

Spooky, spinning, yellow-green orbs spinning in the night.
...ooooOOOOooooOOOOoooooo....

:)

Ghosting is very common in SL. I've been seeing ghosts since beta. Usually, when I see one, I take a picture, and send it to whoever is ghosting. I have a nice little collection of ghost pictures which I may exhibit some day.:D

Also, I have noticed that sometimes some avs seem to keep fighting for no reason. It usually happens after someone uses a sword, and puts it away. It even happened to me once. Now, I assume that whenever this behavior happens, its just a bug.

I remember with amused fondness my first 'time-loop'!

I've had this happen maybe half a dozen times, and it used to occur when my cable modem crashed (customer services updated it or something so it doesnt do this any more). I wouldnt immediately notice that I'd lost my connection, and continue chatting with the 'client side' ghosts of my friends!

Basically, I'd be happily chatting away with a group of people, when I'd notice different people repeating themselves over the space of 30 seconds to a minute. Thing is, different people would repeat themselves out of sync with the each other, so the first couple of times it happened, it took me a minute or two to realise what had just occured! I was chatting with the cache!

The most annoying one to me is ghost dancing. I had been chatting with a couple of people for awhile and one of them, out of the blue, asked me why I was dancing so much. I wasnt dancing!! But, he had been watching me spin around like a lunatic non-stop for over 20 minutes!

I have seen many ghosts, back in Beta I was at a meeting and teleported home and took the AV that had been sitting next to me. I kept asking him why he came too!!

Char told us last night that when she teleported to Mauve from Stg4 in Dore she brought several of the nearby AVs!! She took a picture and showed it to us.

Remember when Fey Brightwillow left her AV in Blue? I think Eggy was the one who made a box and placed it over her and then deleted it, didn't work tho!! LOL

The most interesting one was of a friend of mine (no names please) standing on top of a waterfall, nude & wearing a long appendage. I said "hi!" but no response. Not wanting to embarrass him I flew on and when I returned home he was still standing there in full glory. I asked some other AV's near by but they couldn't see him.

The punch, punch, kick combo used to crack me up every time someone got stuck in it.

Getting stuck in dance mode is quite annoying.

I think the worst though was in beta when I'd change clothes and they wouldn't show for other players, so to them I'd be standing stark naked while on my screen I was totally covered.:o

Oh that naked stuff was the worst. I have a bunch of pics people took of my rear hanging out. What a treat.

What about the PIECES of avatars you find floating. Its like they took off too fast and left some attachment behind. I have tried iming these pieces, but no response yet.

haha

If anyone has any particularly funny/weird/cool reality breakdowns, be sure to take a screenshot and send it to me, for NWN!

Even weirder for me is when everyone suddenly goes silent, and there's no typing, and it feels like a big awkward silence at a boring party. Still weirder, I begin feeling embarrassed, and want to say *anything* to get the conversation going again-- just like IRL.

Then I realize I've been booted off the server for the last 10 minutes, and all is well. Or not awkward, at least.

Hamlet, do you want in-game snapshots, or the "hit the tilde key" shots?

Hit the "~", please! In-world snapshots don't translate
well onto the NWN page. (For some reason, they look
stretched out, when they're converted from .tga to .bmp.)
It's better to start with a .bmp image, which the tilda key
does, then zip that puppy and e-mail it to me eager hands!

My wife, Raelynn, was on last night in the free build area and apparently there was a sound issue...someone kept shouting to turn it down. I'll have to ask her for more info when I get home.

I've seen some other weirdness, for instance, sometimes when long-jumping (jump, fly in same direction, cut fly), my Hulk AV continues "falling" across half a sim, even though it's been on ground level for the last 10 seconds...fell across water last night -- kinda like hydroplaning...

Wonder if I can script something to kick up waves? :D
