The company behind the MMOG Anarchy Online occasionally holds some extraordinarily popular community events, which they call "House of Commons" --- actually, it's a simple developer chat, but the turnout and interest is nothing short of phenomenal every time. Since Second Life is vastly more social than AO or any MMOG probably, it occurs to me that such an event would fit in wonderfully here. The general format is extremely simple. A dozen or so of their developers drop in on a moderated IRC channel hosted on a private server, a bunch of appointed receivers accept input by personal message from the floor and pass questions onto the chat host (who is not a staffer in the interest of balance), and the chat host chucks them one at a time at the devs and someone responds. The result is very insightful and always fun, even when some of the questions are very hard hitting. Then afterwards, the chat logs are posted all over the official forums and fan sites, to be quoted repeatedly ever after to the dev's dismay, lol. SL already has Town Halls of course, but to my knowledge these haven't involved bringing out the cans of Jolt and letting one's hair down with the developers.  Would the culture in Linden Labs allow this sort of thing? I'd have thought so ... the Norwegian techies of AO are pretty cool, but not necessarily cooler than those of Silicon Valley, surely.

It differs only in that it features an anarchic roundtable of rowdy unscripted developers, as opposed to a carefully polished presentation by a high ranking official giving the party line. It has its charm.  This is why I asked whether the culture allowed it As for the use of IRC, the reason for that is simply scalability, ie. getting the live session to thousands of people simultaneously. SL is even less scalable than AO in that regard so this probably applies to us as well, but I prefer to push the in-game technology as much as possible before giving up and using an external system. Let's stick to Town Hall chat for it.

We've done some town halls before with folks other than me... Cory, Robin, Haney, Ryan.
This sounds like a fine idea... will pass along.

Well, PREVIOUSLY (as in, before your time), town halls were done this way, but then around 1.3 town halls ended up being so large that sims were crashing because of them. Realize, a town hall's load is spread across four sims. Four sims couldn't handle the load. As far as I knew, things were still done in a similar fashion. People IM Haney (or whomever) who then passes on questions to Mr. Linden. That's what I saw in the last log I read, at least.
