Why are we only allowed to join ten groups? Doesn't make sense to me that there is a limit on 'group memberships'. Call me a Groupie but I would like to be able to join more than ten.

I think the best reason is so that your group choices accurately reflect your interests. Without a group limit, you could join every group out there and nobody would be able to tell what you're really interested in. Whereas if you're forced to choose between joining the Second Life Topiary Association or the Second Life Paren/Teacher Association, you're more likely to choose the group which resonates most clearly with you.
I'm against abolishing the limit, but upping it wouldn't be a horrible idea. |

Yeah, such a system has to have some balance between unrestrained freedom of additional groups and the control that comes with focus of interest. For each person, it's undoubtedly different but a system based on individual limiters would not work either unless it's YOU who's responsibly controlling yourself -- thus a tricky, "Groupie" matter. Otherwise, it ends up being a Konami Code (i.e. pushing many buttons on one controller).
![]() I have no doubt some people could belong to 50 groups and be deeply interested in each and every one of them -- spending a LOT of time in SL -- and be fine. Just like I have friends who read a dozen newspapers in the morning from front to back. And they're not all fast readers, either. Each person's got a unique style. But ah. When it comes down to it it's kind of rotation, keeping your "Top Ten" (shades of Letterman) in the mix. _____________________

I guess the problem comes mainly from what I could call the 'non-personal interest' groups. I.e. the shopping malls groups (some of them you need to be part of in order to be able to place items to sale in said malls). Not much choice, you need to be part of it, yet it doesn't necessarily reflect a deep interest in these specific places - just that you have a stall to sell items there.

It WOULD be kinda cool to have more - 5 extra for those groups you "have to" join as Tanaquil illustrated - for selling, or whatever - and maybe 3 or so extra ones for the groups you yourself create - and then of course the "top 10" for expressing your keen interests

Exactly, there are so many "non-interest" groups, like clubs, shopping malls..ect. I personally don't have a problem with the 10 group limit. Gives me an excuse to turn down some. However, I do feel that one should have the option of how many groups they choose to join. It is possible that an individual has alot of interest, lol. MJ _____________________

I was also thinking about this the other day. On a DAILY basis, I'm offered membership to many different clubs. I always accept membership because I don't want to hurt any feelings (particularly if I really like you...) but will often remove the club after a certain amount of time.
It would be NICE to have a section for NON-INTEREST groups and a section for INTEREST groups. That way you could be a member of "Blah blah development" and still have plenty of room for the one that really says who you are. _____________________

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Lindens have never responded to the numerous threads concerning this topic. Am I right?

Any Lindens Out There?

The Lindens have certainly not responded to this particular thread on the subject of being allowed more groups. I really can't see where it would weigh down the 'system' if each avie were allowed 20 group memberships.

I don't remember LL responding specifically - but they have indicated they are aware the group feature could be upgraded.
I'd like to see 20 total - and types that have to be opted for when initially set up - like the interest groups for specific purposes, group-builds, etc. and the shopping, club- types groups for malls, vendor space, etc. Here's a Mentor Event I will be hosting on Sat. to offer a Fair so people can get an idea of the scope and variety of groups here in SL. Why not seperate it into you can be a member of X groups and you can be an officer of Y groups in addition to the X. Or maybe create a third 'level' beneath member that doesn't count against the cap and isn't displayed in the profile? This could be used for the Malls, etc. The Non-Interested groups?
