I hope the title got your attention. Now please read what needs to be done and how.

I like to work on weapons in Rauche as do many people. But for the last week I haven't been able to get much done because though I have a fortress which I work inside of, people manage to kill me constantly, even behind two decks of thick walls.

Now this may just sound like "my problem" to the rest of you, but I ask you this. Where does fair fighting end and abuse begin?? Now don't get me wrong. I don't mind a good dog fight. That's partly why people go to Rauche. But how can you fight an advisary who has a weapon that goes through walls and follows you?? Then every time you finnaly make the long treck back from the teleport hub, you get instantly killed again.

There is no chance of combat this way, and it's been my experience that most of the time you never even see your advisary, or know who is killing you. Yesterday, someone was targeting me from Clyde, the next sim over. He wasn't even in Rauche!! I filled an abuse report that time because I actualy found the culprit. But most of the time I can't find out who is doing it because they can manage to stay just out of sight if they want to. Fortunately when I asked the person I caught last night to stop he politely agreed. Now feel like I shouldn't have been so quick to file a report on him after all, however in the past I have been victim to unseen devices that target me automatically in rauche with the unknown owners not even present, and I was fed up that this might be happening again.

This morning I am trying to get some work done in my air ship 500 Meters in the air for protection, and I find myself teleported back to the welcome center! I don't even get a message saying who killed me. All I see is a green dot on radar purposely avoiding comming within visual range. After getting killed several times their after I shouted for the coward to show himself. He did, and I sent an IM asking him to stop. He politely agreed aswell.

Are we going to allow Second life warriors to become a population of cowards with weapons they don't even have to aim or are we going to push for methods that force people to intercource with skill and honor??!!!???

I propose a policy change in LSL which disables damage on all objects which have BOTH setpos and sensor in them. When this combination of functions is used to hunt people down and kill while the owner hides benieth a rock, battle becomes less fun and more like harrasment.

Forcing objects with both SetPos and sensor to give no damage would easily correct this problem, which is a social one, as well as a technical one.

I ask that all responsible and concerned citizens support this motion. Thank you.

Find another place to work on your projects other than an open combat sim. Your reports won't do much because thats what the sim is there for.

It would be one thing if you lived in Jessie and this was hapening because people actually own land there and it could at certain points be considered griefing.

as for the guns I agree with what you're saying.

well you know, its for the same reason we have atomic bomb

well its partly the reason i dont sell this kind of weapon and keep em for myself

That wouldn't work. You could make the object phantom, pass the target co-ords over a chat channel.

Yess, but aslong as they can't follow you it's not so bad. the gunner still hase to aim or sprey really well.

If it matters that much to you, check your Abuse History window. Just because you no longer get the "Echo Omega hit you with a scripted object." messages anymore doesn't mean that that data isn't being recorded.

But still, anyone in Rauche should be considered to be a willing target. Filing abuse there is rather silly. Period.

Of course, now I'm tempted to go building there and test the impregnability of a new suit of armor I have in mind.....

Fire away! :)

I could make a weapon that functions as you have said, and your proposed change would stop it from killing you... but it would not stop it from rezzing something right where you are, and that could kill you. I could also make something physical that gets as close to you as possible, and then just rezzes a bullet at your position, right through a wall. Or make it go phantom, as someone else suggested.

I think what we need is for that "You have died and been teleported home" message (however it's worded) to say something like "You have been killed by _____ ______ and been teleported home." I think that would put an end to much of the anonymous back-stabbing that goes on.

I agree and disagree. I like to see honorable fighting but I can acknowledge peoples rights to create what they want.

I'd like to see a new combat sim that only allows "approved" objects do damage.

Unnecessary, we can already do that in any sim with scripts. Go to the laser arena in Rizal for an example.

Paradigm,

For what it's worth I've made a new public sandbox in Natoma (42, 95) that includes a tiny, damaged enabled strip against a tall wall of land...as well as a collision sensitive target that gives a visible and text readout of what 'ring' of the target has been struck. I like it pretty well for weapons testing, maybe it will help you in making yours.

Thanks Lumiere Noir. I've been to your Ivory towers and it's quite lovely.

Huns, You are quite right, I guess people will always find away around the system to be dis honorable. I have recenely made a weapon that works by rezing something near the victim, however you still have to aim the weapon and be within a close range (it's a flame thrower)

For those of you who can't read or have no reading comprehension... I never said that I reported abuse for people killing me in a kill zone. I reported abuse for people leaving automated weapons around when they are not online. That is abuse and against the TOS, ask any Linden.

I have developed a device that when worn will tell you the owner or any scripted device that hits you. If they are not online then it will say so. It will also tell you if they are in the sim or not. This way we can catch abusers and report them easier. The script is in the next post.

I remember when I jokingly sat in Welcome with the sign, "Move Welcome to Jessie" it was joked that newbies should have to run to the shooting galary upon loging in.
In seriousness, I have been in Jessie twice, the combat sandbox 4 times, only once was I killed (and then it was my own stupid fault for playing with a machine gun nest in the top of the Jessie church). This is one of those truth as I see it things, I see the heart, I respect the heart, I don't go into PK zones longer than I have to, smart weapons are as smart as the coder writing them, if that means ICBM type bullets, well, then the coder's either bored or good.
Some may deny it, but SL's not really too much more than a chat client, and a OpenGL 3D editor with people.
Weapons are good code, if they're unfair, well...don't go to the PK zones until you're ready to fire-test your weapons. One of those, "if it hurts, don't do it" type deals.

YOU chose to play SL on those terms chere.

Don't whine to us because someone is better at it than you.
If you are developing, move to a sandbox, or some other site. But if you are engaged in this sort of Warfare on ANY level, Forget Crying "Foul".

There is No Such Thing as a Civilized War.

Rausch?

Let me get this straight. You went to Rausch and got shot. I am shocked. Actually, I am floored that someone had the GALL to kill you in a combat sim.

What is the world coming too?

when you figure out a way to end a few of these problems first lemme know.

lag weapons which dont have to actually hit anyone to cause damage.

sim crashing weapons.

people shooting from outside of a damage area into it (which is illegal but the lindens seem to ignore it much of the time depending on who is doing it)

people spawn killing you at home point

object spammers

push guns(slight push aint so bad but when you get thrown 2 sims and have to relog thats a problem)

shields

i can probably think of more later, but you get the idea, in damage zones we need to keep a few special weapons to deal with things quickly at times.

Long distance, guided attack that penetrates through multiple walls? Sounds like a perfectly good simulation of modern combat techniques to me.

I few into Jesse a few times out of curiosity, got nailed, laughed and moved on. Not my speed, and not worth complaining about.

(Though if I was a skilled enough coder, I'd invent the equivalent of "Morph Ovum" that worked sim-wide, use it once on Jesse, and never bring it out again. :D )
