Television... is HERE.

Rose sim now has the technology for TV with textures, sounds, and music. It operates currently at about 4 FPS. The sim is serviced by one channel's service, but 5 channels per sim are the minimum we anticipate.

Anyone interested in donating textures, music, and sounds. (Advertisers take note!) to Channel 1 Rose, post the UUIDs (not one at a time, please) in this thread. Specify also what types of UUIDs they are. Note that we do NOT need the actual textures, music, or sounds for broadcast!

For those of you in Rose who already have TV sets, please be patient if your service goes out temporarily. (For example, if a sim crashes and takes our antenna down.) And be mindful of your neighbors.

The technology for the televisions is FREE but not open source! That way ppl can design their own TVs to sell! Those who would like to run a station will pay a small monthly fee which they can easily make up by selling space to advertisers.

For anyone thinking this'll be a way to play your favorite copyrighted songs, you are sadly mistaken. I don't want to loose SL TV. I'm sure if the Lindens see or hear copyrighted material coming from my network I'll be in a world of hurt. If I catch a station-master playing music or textures they don't have permission to play, you're out w/o a refund.

questions:

1) Do you have an LM for the TV station you can post
here? (Remember, if you enter the coordinates in
the form of "secondlife://simulator/x/y" in a web
browser, it'll pop up on the in-game map.)

2) Broadly stated, how does this technology work?

ive seen it working, it definitely does what she says, but there is simply no decent content yet, just random textures and sounds.

im definitely considering implementing kohne's tech for my disco, though, great work!

if you wanna do disco and you need some kindof dj booth i made one that i can sell to you and customize it to be disco and color, all that stuff.

Businesses that would like to air commercials on the emrgent channels should send me an IM or see me in-world.

One business model currently being discussed is to broadcast at least one channel of music videos - perhaps under the same legal restraints as a typical internet radio station, since that is what it really is. Businesses can run commercials between songs

Another model includes short movies createtd by residents. This would be a fine way to air that avant garde flick you always wanted to produce. Commercials would appear before and after each short.

We have faith that content will come. And commercials must inevitably follow

The fact that they are specifically asking for UUIDs tells me exactly how it works. Fairly simple and very clever.
