Why does it say you registered in Oct '03? I'm no Gregorian calendar expert but I dont think Oct was 4 months ago.

And you said you were not going to read the forums again??? I don't recall anyone calling you a n00b. Besides I think you're about the only person who uses that word. But if you think about it: when you consider Second Life a game (most people don't, not meaning we thing it's the matrix) then the rules of that game are that you have to try to fit into the cummunity, and/or try to help build a cool world for your fellow Second Lifers. If you take that into account and read your posts I would say you qualify as a n00b edit: if you don't like to be called names like that, do yourself a favour and start by posting in normal english english is not my primary language but still I do my best to write it correctly.

N00b is a state a being. It is unaffected by age. A man may live a lifetime and die a n00b while another is born already beyond such names. There is no shame in being a n00b, only in refusing to rise above it. Being a n00b is merely a single step in an neverending journey. That being said, STFU.

James, I feel the key to gaining respect in any mass-communication system like this where there is a tendency towards 'elitism' (if that's a word) is to be as self-aware as possible, and be corteous at all times. I just started a few days ago, however this is not the first time I have been involved in massive online multi-uers systems, so I am accustomed to the do's and don'ts of becoming a welcome and respected individual, as well as the struggles one must go through in order to do so. Just be sure to keep your cool, listen to what other have to say, be polite, and never assume anything about anyone; If someone is giving you a hard time because you are new, just roll with the punches, and that will generally show that person(s) that you are a nice person worth their time. If you blow up at them (yell, curse, complain, etc) they will see your true character and avoid you. I've been hanging out in the jessie world lately, which, as many have told me, is a rough neighborhood for someone just starting out; I don't mind. Every now and then, someone will kill me, and I'll wind up back at my base. If I got all bent out of shape about it, that would do no good, and those people would assume I can't take a joke or anything. It's like schoolyard antics; new kids ALWAYS get picked on, but in time, one may, despite not being an 'original', become the most popular kid in school. At the same time, the same 'abuse' may happen to you even as the coolest kid in school, but then it's being done to you by your FRIENDS, not bullies picking on a n00b. It's all about attitude. If you think you're a newb, you are.

Personally, I distinguish between the terms "newbie" and "n00b". A "newbie" is someone new to the game, who is deserving of help in getting used to things, and who can reasonably expect to get that help. A "n00b" is someone who refuses to learn the game, and no matter how long they have been in the game, demands that others assist them with even the most basic of activities.
In short, "newbie" is a state of being. "n00b" is a state of mind.

NOOB = funny word. To me, I've seen people be called a "Noob" if they are new to the game and causing trouble. It's kind of adding insult to a usually fine term. So if you are new and decide to orbit everyone at the welcome area, I will label you NOOB!

Yeah what Julian said. Remember when you were trying to rent out space and I came to your event, James, and someone asked me for a LM to shop (totally personal conversation) and you got annoyed and booted me off your land for handing over a landmark? That, I think, is what our friends are calling "noob" behavior . Then again, it's not nice to call someone out in the forums either, so my apologies. Zana

Newbie - New person bringing their Self to the world. Someone interesting to meet, and of course usually with questions that I'm always willing to answer. Generally a good person and someone you want to help into the community as much as possible.
Noob - Pejorative form of Newbie. Probably derived from the word boob. Someone (regardless of their length of time in the game or understanding of the workings of the UI) who consistently and purposefully avoids adjusting to community standards. A social hacker whose main enjoyment of the game comes from the lessening of other's enjoyment. Referring to one's self or others as a Noob fairly much instantly relegates you to this class. Not a big issue in SL, as most people either learn better and switch to Newbie status or are seen no more.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh. The distinction struck me as interesting.
If you are worried that you or someone you care about may be a Noob, don't give up hope! You can be saved. Just start taking some time to consider someone elses viewpoint. Not that you have to give up your own desires, just make sure you're not purposefully wrecking the game for someone else.
