Dreaded "waiting for region handshake" and then crash

I have just downloaded 1.23.4 on my MacBook Pro. When I go to log in everything is fine until the handshake. It crashes telling me, "We're having trouble connecting. There may be a problem with your internet connection..." I have yet to be able to connect. I've looked everywhere for an answer. I've checked my firewall allowing all incoming connections. I have an airport and eliminated that possibility by connecting directly to the internet via my usb port, still nothing. I can't figure this one out. Hell, I design websites for a living and am constantly trouble shooting server problems, connection problems, etc but this has me dumbfounded. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

did you try clearing SL off your computer completely? removing not just the .app but the SecondLife stuff in Application Support? could just be a screwed up preference in the settings in the "$USER/Library/Application Support/SecondLife" folder
