I've been having trouble getting SL to run on my new macbook running OSX 10.5. I submitted a ticket, thinking that fairly soon, another version will come out and it will be all good. Instead, here is the response I received from LL:
"We have solved your issue Solution: Hello Thank you for contacting us with your issue. The macbook intel graphics card driver is unsupported by second life. Linden Lab Support"
Um... I'm sorry, I don't think my issue has been solved. Is there any move to support the macbook intel graphics card at some point in the future? Or do I need to consider selling up and moving out?

well crap, yeah, I am now unsupported as well. Not running a Mac, but my video card just dropped below the threshold with Windlight. Drivers updates maybe, maybe 'Bootcamp" and Windows XP. It's not that hard to dual boot a Mac, especially the 10.5

The MacBook has never been officially supported by LL. Never. It's said so in the system requirement for a long time.
That having been said, there are some workarounds that you can find by searching through this very forum. None are officially condoned by Linden, however.
My MacBook Pro continues to run SL beautifully (he said, knocking on wood).

Try the OnRez viewer....might work for ya. It's geared toward new users so it's simplified a bit, but something is better than nothing http://viewer.onrez.com/

Just don't rez the purple monkeys on my parcel. I could do without the resulting lag. Calliope, do you think that Linden should list a spec that MAYBE would work, sometimes? Any responsible company lists conservative sysreqs. It doesn't mean it ill NEVER work. It means that for a lot of people, it won't. So, they're doing the right thing. If they did the opposite, you'd complain like hell. "They said it would work and it doesn't!!! Wahhhh!" Tell me I'm wrong.

I can run WL on my black macbook at low settings, and i had a white macbook previously but the video was too low to run SL in any usable fashion.

Actually, when I was using the linux client I never complained, because they made it very clear that it was an alpha product, and as such, I know everything is going to be broken. This has to do with claims and expectations. The OS X client isn't even in BETA, yet it has more issues than the linux client had in its second alpha release. The problem is that LL is claiming that it works---when very clearly, it does not.

Use the newest viewer, and turn the graphics options down as low a they go. If it an option, turn it off.
Make sure your network bandwidth is good.
Make sure latest OS X patches are installed.
Good luck. Macbook will work, just don't ever expect it to work well.
Macbooks are great, they just do not do 3D worth a damn.

OnRez viewer - nope

Tried the on-rez viewer - still froze within ten seconds and I had to reboot.
I'll keep trying the new builds - sooner or later one of them should work!

Working now
04-15-2008 07:58
Ok not quite sure what I did right here, but I updated the firmware, then went in world using another machine and set everything to lowest setting and zapped the cache.
And now it seems to be working ok - even in Caledon - a texture-rich environment.
This is on the latest macbook running OS X 10.5.2 - the one Linden labs reckons was not supported - I'm still annoyed that their response was so unhelpful.
My thanks to the person who suggested turning all sound and video settings to minimum and set to lowest bandwidth. I've even been able to incrementally advance some of the graphics settings so it looks good and remains reasonably stable
Thanks to you all for your helpful comments.
