New thread for the now new public release of the Voice Viewer

I can't transmit my voice. Having problems with the setup wizard.

G5 Tower, OS X 10.4.blah blah

using a iSight for my microphone source. Doesn't seem to recognize it at all.

Any ideas/work arounds?

Can't help Vincent, but I wonder if my iMac G5 is too old (about two years now) to work with the Voice viewer? Also I'm having MacOS 10.3.9, maybe that's the problem. But it seems I don't get all the options in the viewer preferences to choose the output and input resources, I only have 'default' on each. And needless to say, voice feature doesn't work for me at all. All other sounds work fine, as does music stream.

Not that I'd want to use the voice all the time, but I am curious to know if I am the only one with this problem

I have an Intel Mac (10.4.8) with built-in mic. I can choose the built-in mic option, but the application doesn't recognizes it...

Don't have a real solution yet, and I'm running 10.3.9 as well - but perhaps it's firewall settings? I've tried running SL Voice (first view as well as the current viewer) with my firewall disabled, and even disabled my other safeguard programs, and still can't get it to work.
(I know...big help, huh?)

I haven't had this issue with Skype (works just fine), so I know my Mac is not malfunctioning.

Just a thought...

I have also used Skype with no problems, so the problem is with SL Voice viewer obviously then.

I don't have any safeguard programs on my iMac, and we don't have any kind of firewall system either, so that can't be the root of the problem. (Why would I need such anyway with a Mac? ;-) )

I am going to go and check once again the system preferences of my iMac, but I doupt it will help.

I too had no luck with voice till I used 10.4.10 on a p.mac g5, with logitech p.book usb headset. I had 2 weeks of relatively trouble free voice, but now with the new client it has all gone to hell, of some comfort to know all my PC buddies are having the same problems, now we don't chat we spend all our time enabling disabling logging off and logging on to something which as yet don't work right.

Are any of you using a headset in your attempts? If so, which brands/makes are compatiable... or does it matter?

I keep hearing I should get Logitech, but before I buy I want to be sure it's going to work!

iMac G5 10.4.10

Thanks. :-)

breaking up
08-06-2007 16:40
I'm getting frustrated.

I can get SL to recognize both the internal mic on my iBook G4 and the USB headset I'm using, but the voices I hear break up terribly as does my voice to other people.

I use the same headset on Skype with great results, no breakup. I've also used it to listen to iTunes. Perfect.

Any suggestions? I have over 1Gb of ram.

thank you!

I've noticed that in some sims, my voice had pretty bad breakup and was reasonably okay in other sims. I'd be curious to know if poor quality followed people around regardless of where they were.

Sound is seriously broken
08-07-2007 03:26
Sound is seriously broken with the latest voice enabled viewer. I've had NO sound at all, not even music, since the new viewer. Max OSX 10.4.10 SL 1.18.1 Mac mini 1Gb.

There's a thread on the bug tracker thats been there since July 17 about this.

Some have found Quicktime reinstall helps, but that's not so in my case and is definately not a fix.

It's totally ridiculous how the Mac community should be disadvantaged like this. The latest version works fine on Windows.

It's not just the mac client...

I'm a mac user and no I haven't dnloaded the optional viewer (from having read posts like these first!) but I can tell you that it seems the new viewer is bad for many using PC/Windows as well. I have many friends for whom sound in general is now broken not to mention lockups and crashes. At least it's fair - not just the persecuted mac community! lol.

My voice breaks up pretty much everywhere I am.

I also have an issue with the Talk button turning itself off and on without my assistance. A bit inconvenient, that.

Anyone have the Pre-Voice version?

Voice Viewer sucks. I will seriously pay money if someone can tell me how to find the previous version.

OK. So voice sucks for Macs, nothing new for those of us with Macs. We usually have to wait a whole lot of revisions before we get anything to work.

What I want to know is...Has anyone with a Mac got voice to work now with the full release?

hi all,

I don't have the voice too.
I tested to see if it was the 401 error and it´s not, but still, voice doesn´t work.
(about the 401 error --> /111/c4/201797/1.html)

I m on an iBook G4 10.4.10. i run sl without running other software.
i´ve posted a screenshot from my debug console here:

would be great if someone can have a look...

many thanks

I've had no major problems with voice on my Macbook Pro (10.4.10, Core Duo 2ghz, 2Gb Ram, Airport connection to router, cable internet at 10mbps down 1mbps up) with a USB Plantronics headset.

SL does not see any options for input or output on my system other than Default. Thats is fine, I don't really care, when my headset is plugged in I have it set as default input and output so it works fine. Make sure you go into Sound in System Preferences and set your default input and output you want before you launch SL, and the default setting in SL should work ok.

If your headset like mine doesn't give you much changeable options in System Preferences, you can also set up everything you need in the App, Audio Midi Setup. In there you can also select your default input and output, and mute or unmute the mic, or change the volume input of the mic. This is the only place i can on my headset as the options are all grayed out in System Preferences.

I did have a problem once after release (never happened on first look) where i could hear everyone fine, but everyone heard me very very choppy. Nothing seemed to fix it, but the next day (and ever after so far) its been just fine without being choppy at all. I'm thinking it was just something in my route, or the main voice servers I was route through that others weren't, I don't know.

I don't understand why any of you people care about voice... it's the stupidest feature ever added to Second Life.
