Tonight prior to upgrading to 1.12.1.9, SL started freezing for a few seconds on and off. It got more and more frequent over time, and eventually it got so often that I relogged and got the new update. That was a big mistake. It started freezing the whole system (needed to hard reboot) in the same manner - getting more and more frequent over the evening. I finally gave up when I could spend less than 5 minutes ISL without having to hard reboot everything. Is anyone else going throught this? Please tell me that the totally unusable nightmare that has been SL this week is going to be over soon.

I have yet to have SL crash my login, let alone the whole system. That being said, have you tried a full, clean reinstall?
* Delete ~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/ * Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.secondlife.indra.viewer.plist * Delete the Second Life application
Then install the new version.
This is the nuke & pave approach and will reset all your preferences. You will not lose anything in world (at least not by doing this -- doesn't affect SL server problems).

Im having almost exactly the same problem with crashes except i installed 1.12.1.9 with out a previous version of SL installed. Iv got a Radeon 9600XT 256Mb here (Running Ubuntu so ATIs attempt at drivers also doesnt help) So far havent found any solution, if i do will be sure to post it.
Also, out of curiousity, when your system freezes does any audio playing at the time loop at about the time its playing (mine plays for about a second after the freeze then starts looping back to the moment of freeze) After a couple of mins of this it then just freezes totally.
Thinking this might be a hardware issue here, have exactly the same thing happen to me playing BF2 in windows.
Ubuntu 6.06.1 (32 Bit) AMD 64 3000+ ATI Radeon 9600XT 1Gb RAM
(Edit: Sorry about the linux side of this, did a search for this problem and didnt notice the section til after i posted, also forgot to subscribe)

Hmmm - it might not be Mac specific then. I think it's related to the graphics card. I took mine out, cleaned it, and reconnected it and the volume of crashes went way down. It didn't fix it entirely - I just crashed again this morning - but doing that and getting a newer version still helped. When I freeze - the sound keeps running. If I have a song playing on iTunes, that song finishes. Looping sounds in world keep going indefinitely. I very rarely had SL crashes that took down the whole system before. Heck, nothing except SL takes the whole thing down, which is why this is so annoying.

yes, is strange. I have a MacBook intel, which has been otherwise happy with SL. Except since last update. The computer suddenly powers off when playing SL, tho not always immediately, but often within 2-3 minutes.
This is different than hard crashes I've known from previous Macs (going back to mid-1990s Apple laptops, too): no freeze, just sudden power loss. Could be a hardware thing too, I know. But seems very coincidental that SL's update coincided, and that power outage happens when playing SL. Anyone else with black screen and/or power freeze?

Me again, definatly think its hardware related (for me atleast) Was messing about in google earth ealier and had the exact same type of crash happen to me, so I figure its either the card itself (Hopefully replacing soon *fingers crossed* so we will know) or its ATIs drivers would be my guess.

Anyone else with black screen and/or power freeze? might not be the update, someone told me there was a known issue Apple has admited to with Macbook (non Pro) where some have power off issues while using them, and have to be repaired under warranty. Maybe SL is pushing the hardware harder than other things you do? Or maybe it is just SL, dont know.....

This was fixed with a later release... anyone still seeing this just download the latest version - do not autoupdate.
