system advice?

Performance is not too bad with the following

powermac g4
cpu speed 933
memory 768
geforce4 mx vram 64
mac os 10.3.9

I got this system used on craigslist for a pretty good price. At the time I just wanted something adequate for running adobe creative suite, which it is. Within a week of buying this system I found out about SL. I know my cpu speed is a little below recommended minimum. In SL preferences I have bandwidth down to 200 and still get some packet loss. When shopping it takes a longish time to see all the signs.

Is there anything I can do to upgrade this system to improve performance? I am reluctant to buy a faster machine as my budget is tight and I only just bought this one two months ago. But I could perhaps spring for a better graphics card or more memory.
-Thanks, Sylvia

Memory, more the merrier

your memory is barely enough to run the system! Get a gig, even two gigs and you'll notice better performance. Also, check your draw distance in preferences, in laggy spots turn it down to 64 meters, you wont see as far, but things closer to yu will load a lot faster. Good luck, and viva la Mac!

Sylvia,

I have the exact same mac you have, but with 1.5Gb's of memory. I'd suggest upping the ram like has been said and try and get a graphics card with at least 128Mb's of VRAM. You'll notice an overall speed up in the rendering with a better graphics card

Thanks to both of you. I went ahead and got a 512 for the slot that was empty which bring my ram to 1280. Already better for displaying signs and streaming audio. Will look into getting a card.

Ah something else that people with mac's don't talk about too much. You might want to defragment your hard drive with something like Drive Genius or TechTool Pro. I defragged my internal last night and SL runs way better now.

OMG, the increased ram is making a huge difference. I was missing a lot of detail. SL is so beautiful. $130 well spent.

Have ordered the graphics card on ebay.
