I can hear sounds in other applicaitons, play music in iTunes, play wav files, etc on my laptop, but recently all sounds in SL have stopped playing for me.
I don't believe in asking for help until I have exhausted all of my own resources, So...I searched the Knowledge base for sound issues, found nothing helpful. I read the Help files regarding preference settings. I triple checked all preferences, do not have mute audio checked, all volume control sliders are at mid point, my volume control on my computer is set to its highest level. But still I cannot hear any sounds in SL. No music, no user interface sounds, no sound effects like walking, no wind, I can not hear wav files that I tell to play, but my partner can.
I cleared the cache in preferences and deleted my cache file.
I double checked this all a bit ago when no packet loss was showing, still no sound.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause this or how to fix it?
Computer: Mac PowerBook G4, 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.5 GB SDRAM, Mac OS 10.3.9

Damn... I can't find it, but this was answered previously. From memory, I recall a few possible issues: 1. D'OH! Be sure you're at a location that is actually streaming music! 2. D'OH! and for the record, those of you with INTEL macs, as of this post, there is no way to play OGG format from within SL. (You'll know if this is the issue, 'cause when you turn on the music in SL, you'll crash HARD) Instead, use VLC to play your music. IM me in world if you need help with this. 3. If the Music you want to hear is coming from FLASH, and you've updated to the latest QT, you should go to System Prefs => Quicktime => Advanced => Enable Flash. Apple made the default for this 'off' in the last update. 4. D'OH! Be sure your prefs in SL are configed to play Music! (Double D'OH!) 5. MIDI. Have you been playing with MIDI? it can redirect your audio streams in unexpected ways--not just MIDI playback--all audio. Use AUDIO MIDI SETUP in your Utilities folder to check. There are too many combo's and possibilities within MIDI. If you see something odd or suspicious and need help, IM to me in world. I don't know MIDI that well, but I'll try to help.
And of course, the stock suggestion: A complete trash of all things quicktime and a restore (don't forget to kill the prefs file at ~library/Preferences/com.apple.***.plist (where '***' is several quicktime name variations)

Thank you for the response.
its not just streaming music that is not workig, it is ALL sounds in SL that are NOT working. I can't hear anything in the SL application.
I have not been doing anything with MIDI.
I will try killing the quicktime preferences files.
Thanks,

I've often had this problem after opening other music or sound editing programs that change the sampling rates. Look in Applications:Utilities for the Audio MIDI Setup. In the Audio Devices tab, look under Audio Output. SL will only work if the Format is 44100.0 Hz.
Yeah, I know ... it's a FEATURE.

I read your post with interest as I had the same issue. I checked the preferrences setting a dozen times.
I got my mac system used through craigslist anad had not explored all the devices and settings. One day I looked in the OS preferences for sound. There were two options for output device. I switched from Digidesign HW (mbox) selected to the internal speakers and started getting sound in SL. Mind you I was getting the alert sound and iTunes just fine with Digidesign selected.

Update: Well, I am still not sure what the problem was with my sound settings. Perhaps those settings were corrupted on my hard drive, as this sound problem was the only problem I noticed before it crashed. Last weekend my Mac froze up and I was unable to restart it. Went to the local Apple store and they determined that my hard drive structure was corrupted. They had to reformat it, wiping out all my data, and reinstall the operating system. Now my sound works again in SL. I do not recommend this method of fixing the problem though.
