OK I'm really into buying a MacBook, it fits my budget. Im not a power user of SL by any stretch so Im just after opinions at the moment. Im currently running a iMac G4 1GHz 15" (the dome iMac). SL runs OK on this, for what I need anyway. Just wondering if the MacBook would be the same or better than this set up?

The macbook is'nt all that good to run SL,even with maxed out RAM i find it sluggish, HARDLY ANY IMPROVMENT FROM MY OLD IMAC G5, though you will find that it runs better on windows on a macbook via bootcamp. Shows that the Mac version is poor compared to windows code.

When it comes to the crunch, the macbooks graphics card is pants.

But you think it would be better than my old iMac G4 1GHz?

Loki is right, the MacBook doesn't have a separate graphics card. You have to get the Pro for that. Without the card SL wil be verrrrry slow.

I believe one of the Lindens runs SL on a MacBook Not-Pro and said he was fairly happy with it. I'd have all your options turned down though, and bear in mind that the client will only get more demanding as time goes on.

Just had a play on a mates MacBook, it was definitely nippier than my iMac set up at home. To be honest I couldn't justify another £500 - £600 for the Pro.

Shame but time will tell.

that really doesnt mean that the code by LL is poor. There have been several games and programs tested on the Mac computers with GMA950s that run better in Windows. Most think its a driver issue in OSX.

I ran SL on my MacBook Pro under OSX and Windows and I cant tell a difference.... so I'm guessing the ATi drivers are a bit better. Intel drivers are new to OSX, might give some time for people to get the issues worked out.

Yeah, don't get MacBook to run SL, compared to my 1.2Ghz G4 iBook with 32MB graphics it's barely an inprovement. Where i get 5fps, it gets 7fps.

The same cpu MacBook Pro with the 256mb card gets 40fps in the same place.

If you can't afford the Pro, then dont' bother with the MacBook and get an iMac 17" instead with the 128mb graphics. Vastly better.

I've got a non-Pro, just bought it maybe a month ago. SL runs okay on it, probably a hair better than your G4 iMac, but maybe not by as much as you hope. If you're buying it with SL in the front of your mind, I'd say don't do it. I have my MacBook for other reasons, and being able to log into SL was just a bonus. I think I doubled the default RAM, which probably makes a difference. I'm not a computer geek, so I could be wrong about that, but just thought I'd mention it.

Anyway, get the Pro if you can figure out how to afford it. The non-Pro does what I need it to do, and I can log into SL adequately. But don't buy the non-Pro if SL is one of your primary concerns.
