Mac PowerBook Running system 10.??
Using Garage Band on my PowerBook I recorded my voice saying several phrases, using the built in microphone. Then using iTunes I converted them to Wav files and uploaded them to SL. I can hear them in SL, but only if the volume is turned all the way up and music is off. They seem to have been recored at a low volume level. I recorded the sounds with the PowerBook only 1.5' of so from my face and spoke at a normal voice level.
CAn the sounds I recorded and saved in Garage Band be adjusted to increase the volume level?
Or do I need to do it all over again?
Any recommendations on freeware or shareware sound editors available that would be better for doing this?

audacity may work for you, its a free open source app that will record and edit sounds. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15063also if the file is still saved in garage band i think you should be able to edit it (not at home, cant try it out). good luck jester .

But watch the levels. In Audacity, I might suggest starting by applying the compressor to it, then doing a normalize. You don't want your waves to get clipped or it'll sound terrible. Digital distortion is really awful. I've notice something similar in a sound I did for a "sound check" ambience sound to get the feel of a live performance. It sounds fine in iTunes, and QT player, has good level, with peaks right where they should be, and it also sounds fine if played from inventory, but when put in the object is much quieter. I think this has to do with LL's 3d proximity effects, and possibly a too low default value for playback level from objects, I've been toying with using some scripting calls to raise the volume of it in world.

I would suggest downloading a copy of HairerSoft's Amadeus. It's a remarkable sound editor, $30 shareware if you decide to keep it, that will not only allow you to change the volume of your recorded sounds, but clean up the static, edit out the sound of the dog barking, change the pitch, join your sound with a different sound, and do just about anything else you want to do with them. Seriously, it's great, and you can't beat that price. (You also get to try the demo for 30 days before it starts reminding you it's shareware. Not 30 calendar days. 30 days of playing with it, spread out over how ever many months that takes you.)

I'm an active user of garageband, and i believe once you've recorded your quotes; there is a volume selection that starts in the middle on the right side of the garageband screen; which there you can increase the volume to the highest point, and also increase the volume on the southwest portion of the screen. If not, I suggest "Sound Studio". I happen to use it because it came with my computer for free; but its very easy to use and crop audio on, and the trial version gives you full features for 30 minutes, and 15 program openings; enough time to record all you want and export it with high sound quality. Hope this helps
