I bought a brand new iMac because of the very bad performance of my old G4. iMac 2,16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1Go 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM graphic card :ATY,RadeonX1600 VRAM (total) :256 Mo.
But still my bandwith goes down to 0 after 2 or 3 minutes and i have to unlog and relog. and so on evry 3 minutes.
So I read all the forums, help knowlegebase contacted SLsupport, with no answer. I tried : -changed my wireless connection to a wired one -tried the max bandwith at 120, and 500 and 1500, as read in different forum threads, with no effect - checked i didn't have an activated firewall -deactivated "bumpmapping" and "ripple water" don't really know what to set the cache memory and graphic crad memory to(i put 256Mo).
I know there already are tons of discussions on this subject, but i really have tried everything i read (and could understand), and I really don't know what to do anymore..... please help .............................................................................

Tech Heavy Help needed on this one...
12-31-2006 13:36
Wow! You've done it all. This could be tough... see: /164/de/155224/1.htmlYour basic cache should be fine at 1 Gig. I seem to recall an issue with too much ram on the graphics card. Try reducing the graphics ram that's used from 256 to 64? I don't remember which card had this problem, but reducing RAM solved it. If memory serves, if it runs correctly at 64, then you can probably bump it up to 128. Hopefully, with 10.5 this will be fixed. =========================Assuming that's not a fix: So it runs fine for a few minutes? During that time, all seems to be working? Then the BW goes to zero... When that happens, and while SL is still open, can you 1. open a web browser and load (and then RELOAD) a webpage? 2. open System Prefs and click on Network, "Assist Me...", "Diagnostics..." and run the Apple built in Network tester. If either of these fail, then I'd guess your router is probably set wrong.. and if they work, 1. it could still be your router...Is there a LOG in the router you can get to? 2. Or...(and I'm reaching here) your ISP sees the streaming data and stops your connection.

hi, thank you for your answer!!
i put the video ram down to 64.no change.
So it runs fine for a few minutes? ACTUALLY 1 MINUTE During that time, all seems to be working? YES Then the BW goes to zero...YEP When that happens, and while SL is still open, can you 1. open a web browser and load (and then RELOAD) a webpage? YES 2. open System Prefs and click on Network, "Assist Me...", "Diagnostics..." and run the Apple built in Network tester. DIAGNOSTIC IS PERFECT
If either of these fail, then I'd guess your router is probably set wrong.. and if they work, 1. it could still be your router...Is there a LOG in the router you can get to? CHEKED THE CONNECTION : SOMEWHERE AROUND 6MEGA 2. Or...(and I'm reaching here) your ISP sees the streaming data and stops your connection.
and thats where i don't understand anymore, what does ISP stand for? I called my internet provider, they checked my connection and told me that it wasn't their fault (of course). another "funny" thing is that it stay connected longer on my old mac powerbook G4, I wonder why?

ISP=Internet Service Provider, your cable company in this case.
So SL ran okay on your old mac? With this cable company, and this cable modem, and this router, your old mac did not drop you after a minute or 3? If true, then we can probably eliminate all of these items.
So... How did you install the software (ALL THE Software, not just SL) onto your new mac? Did you just copy your user folders over? Perhaps from backup CD's or using ethernet cables? If so, then that could be the problem. The contents of the G4 folder will be different than the new mac 'cuz of the driver differences.
To test this quickly, make a New User on the new mac. Log on to the new user. Add NO software, except the SL program. and run it. If this works, then there's something fishy in your existing user folder.

I tried redownloading a new SL, created an other account (an additional acount that is, but i don't think that's of any importance) exactly the same happens. but yes I did copy alll the folders when i got my new mac with a firewire cable and the old mac appearing on the desktop (ctrlT).
The connection really depends, i tried all the different preferences sttings with both computers this night. the G4 runs a little longer, but graphic card is so poor it takes hours to see anything. new mac really freezes after 1 cminute, can only rotate. but when i look at the statistic window i still have 10 to 15 Kps, but can't move. sometimes i can stilll search or teleport. which means i'm not completely disconnected. other strange thing, i have this impression that when i keep moving my avatar( walking) it stays connected longer. maybe a wrong impression.
thank you so much for your help!!!!!!!!!! i can't believe i still stay on SL all night, reconnecting every minute!!!!! completely crazy!

Oda, I'm not sure if I explained what to try or understood what you're doing. Create a new Account on your MAC, (in System Preferences, Accounts). It'll be brand new, spanky clean, with no artifacts left from your G4. Log out of your old Mac Account (Apple Menu) and Log into that new Mac account, Download SL, and login to SL (you can use your existing SL Account and Avitar).
...the point is to be SURE that no drivers or prefs from the old Mac are causing the crash.

Is the problem the ISP?

Oda, what kind of internet provider do you have? cable, telephone, etc? It sounds like the internet provider may be limiting you data rate. Is there a way for you to try your computer at a friend's house? on a high speed internet conection that you know works on SL?

sterling, scruffy, oooops. i didn't get that right the first time.sorry. i made a new "mac" account etc etc i does make it a little better, lets say 90 sec instead of 30sec in the same place.....not much of a change.....unfortunately..... don't know what to do anymore.... can't believe this isn't going to work!!!! i guess i will take my iMac to a friends to try another connection.....and if it works better, then i guess i'll just move to his place . ifr it is my internet provider (dsl) that's limiting my data rate, is there anything i can do to keep that from happening (except changing provider, since i started this one 2 months ago)? thanks for the time spent on my desperate case!!!!!

DSL connetion
01-04-2007 17:03
Oda, If you can try your computer at your friends, that will tell you if it's the internet provider or your computer. I have a friend that just got rid of his DSL connection because of similar problems, he was always loosing connections to sites he was on. He went to a cable provider and that solved his problems. I don't know if that's what your problem is, but if it is the DSL, then switching providers may be a fairly easy fix.

Oda, so just to confirm, if you use your old G4, it works okay with the same DSL connection? huh.... So, trying at a friends is a good idea...but I'm thinking there's something wrong. Others with that iMac are doing fine...
But...if the old mac worked on your DSL, and the current mac stays connected but your avatar won't move, I'd suspect a hardware error.
===>Try using the keyboard and mouse from the G4. See if its a simple fault in the peripherals.
---grasping at last straws: So I guess I'd suggest you use the Disk Utility to Clean any Permission and disk errors (using the Startup CD). If that doesn't fix it, then I'm at a loss. ---last thing to say Do you live near an Apple store, by chance? Might be worth taking it in for a Genius checkup...there have been some bad iMacs reported in these forums.
