MacBook Experiences?

Everyone...

I am about to buy a new MacBook (not the Pro), and I'm interested to find out what kind of SL performance experiences people are having? I am planning on going with 1GB of main memory. Currently I run on a Dell with a 128MB video card and a 2ghz celeron, and the performance is pretty choppy.

Anyone who can post their experiences with SL on the MacBook here would be greatly appreciated.

bad.... bad performance.

the 950GMA video in the machine is not supported by Linden Labs. It does work (for now) though poorly. Yes SL is usable with some low settings on the MacBook, but there is no guarentee that it will work after any future updates. There are things the GMA950 simply cannot do, that all the supported cards can... so if those things end up being required in some future update, youll then be out of luck.

I've installed and used SL on a macbook 1.83 and was disappointed by the results. It was running about 12 fps when a macbook pro with the same speed and ram was running nearly 25 or 30fps if I remember correctly. Same CPU, so the only difference was the graphics card.

I hear that the intel chipset on the Macbook is actually using a rather outdated driver, which apple claims they're updating in the near future. WoW users in particular have been crying for better performance, so hopefully apple listens. This should help for SL as well.

Thanks for the feedback!

The feedback is greatly appreciated. Sounds like I may need to forego the Mac if I want to see any performance improvement in SL. I had feared this when I found out it was the Intel chipset that was powering the new MacBooks.

On a related note, it seems that the SL software gets increasingly bloated with each new release. Linden Labs would be well served to start optimizing their code instead of simply eliminating customers with every upgrade. I know it's a 3-D world, but my desktop has a 128MB video card, and runs like a pig. Other 3-D programs run fine, however, in the same system.

I love playing SL, and I can deal with a certain amount of performance hits. What I can't do is constantly upgrade hardware, especially at the rate they seem to crank out new versions. I hope they can find some way to address this.

A lot of the slowness isnt because your system cant rendoer it fast enough, or the engine is just bad, but just because so much has to be streamed and downloaded, your video card can often be sitting there just waiting for information.

wen i first got my black macbook it was just as the new flexiprim update was released, it worked very poorly and i screamed lots,... since then its paromance has improved with every update. I have found SL works better on windows running on the macbook. When i DJ in SL i run SL under windows XP on my macbook.

I was about to suggest the same thing. I have the a MacBook Pro and an Intel Mac Mini. I only run Second Life on the Mac Mini under Windows XP, mostly because it's silly to duplicate the same files on the hard drive. I think SL runs better under XP because the video card drivers and code has been finetuned. I hope I'm saying that clearly. I need a cup of coffee.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?
Yes, it's true, I have a blog now!

Same - Same - Between booting in XP or MacOSX. Same fps. Or very close.

The diff are that I can use one more option in preferences. Dont ask what:-) But I get a more detailed screen.

But I use the Mac version as I have several softwares that I dont have for XP.

hi, I went from a Powerbook G4 1.67 mhz to new MacBook, 2 Ghz, etc. MacBook has been better, except for ripple water effect, which MacBook hates. Also 2GB ram in MacBook makes notable difference. That's just my 2 cents...
