Thanks in advance... Runs fine, Macbook Pro, 10.5.2 with the graphics update. I just did it though, so I'll let you know if there are issues.

Point me in the right direction, please?
02-12-2008 06:49
Hi! I'm a newbie to SL, neither a mac wizard nor total dummy. SL works great on my iMac, but not on my 2-year-old MBP (too slow). I was ready to replace the MBP anyway, so went this time with a MB C2D 2.2GHz 1GB R. I was so disappointed to learn after the fact that I couldn't run SL, as that was specifically why I bought it. Questions: 1. If I increase RAM, update to 10.5.2, and change the graphics card, is it possible SL will run, or is there yet another glitch because it's not a Pro? 2. Would you point me in the direction to learn more about Windlight, please? I've gotten a little lost sifting through the forums. Thank you. --Claudie From: Ludvaig Lindman Yeah, just installed it as well...performance is awsome at the moment...no crash so far...running windlight in high quality mode with 15-25 FPS...hope it wont get worse MBP:C2D - 2.6 GhZ, 4GB-RAM, 256MB nVidia graphics card

Also, a MB has intel graphics, which can run SL, but very poorly.. not nearly as good as your old MBP. And no, you cannot change the graphics card in any macbook, its stuck the way it came... its not really a separate card, thats just standard terminology, from back when they always were cards.

"Macbook Pro, 10.5.2 with the graphics update."
I know about 10.5.2, but what's the graphics update?

Kiwini, re-run software update after you get 10.5.2. The graphics update requires 10.5.2 to be installed so you won't see it in software update unless you do.

Seems to work fine on a December 2007 Mac Pro quad-core. I was getting very nice frame rates with both the Windlight and standard clients. Windlight was faster by a couple of FPS, with everything maxxed. And thanks for the heads up about the graphics update!

So far no crash (especially no annoying FREEZE), which I had several times a day...to me thats a great update! Don't forget to get the graphics update after you downloaded and installed 10.5.2!

Up and running
02-12-2008 18:23
Hi, Missy, SL runs on the old MBP, it's just slow. Thanks for the info on the graphics card. The good news is that with the 10.5.2 and graphics update, I'm currently bebopping in SL with my new little MB as we speak. My house rezzed up quicker than with the my iMac. So far it's zippy and stable and I'm happy as a clam at high tide! From: Missy Malaprop Your old MBP cant run SL well? I have an original, two year old MBP and it runs it just fine. First pass last night. I got higher frame rates than before, BUT, I crashed a lot more often. Was trying to shop in a bunch of busy malls, so maybe it was lag related. Still testing...

Whoa!
Performance is TOTALLY rocking with 10.5.2 and the graphics update. Frame rates are great, did a bunch of stuff for a couple of hours with no crashing.
Loving it so far!

Since updating, my girlfriends new macbook with x3100 graphics is WAAAYYY faster than my older GMA950 macbook. Seems like the new drivers might be helping performance at long last.
The X3100 now runs with Basic shaders in Windlight at about double the fps my GMA950 does without them on. Which is a turn up for the books as it used to perform terribly.

@Zak: I have a MacBook Pro 1,86 Ghz dual Intel with an ATI X1600 128Mb graphic card. When I launch SL the system reboot or I have Kernel Panic.... I'm thinking to re-install everything.....

MacBook OSX 10.5.2 not running SL
02-23-2008 01:27
Just got a new MacBook with 10.5.2 and SL doesn't run.
I used an older MacBook with 10.4.11 before without any issues.
With the new one and 10.5.2 I freeze and crash as soon as I'm logged in.
Anyone that can give me an idea whether this is an issue with the settings of the Mac or SL please let me know.

Running SL on a new MAC after transferring disk files
02-23-2008 09:23
Hi Tyler
When you get a new MAC you can transfer all your files from your old computer with a rapid firewire connection.
Alas this transfers the old SL Cache to your new computer. This will often cause the computer to crash immediately as it tries to run SL.
You must find your SL Cache on your disk and manually drag it to the trash. Mine is in my home folder >library>application support>second Life> Cache
Or just search for "Second Life" Folders until you find the one with your cache in it.
Once you dispose of your cache start second life and all should be fine.

After a lot more testing, I have found that the client will periodically freeze for 20-30 seconds at a time, somewhat randomly. Sometimes I don't get these freezes; other times, I get them pretty regularly. I cannot seem to predict it. The "spinning beachball of death" will appear and the SL client will be totally frozen for a moment. CPU activity spikes at this point up to 180%. Sometimes it does not recover. I am still able to switch to other programs and they run fine, while SL is in the background. I am able to force-quit SL and relaunch with no problems.
I no longer get any "hard" system crashes or "total" freezes like before the update.
However these periodic freezes are very annoying, especially since I do a lot of RP. I will report these issues on Jira.
Other than that the performance seems good, though oddly it seems better at some times than at others -- but I guess that's just SL for ya.
