Okay, so I resetup my Bluetooth headset so I could use Skype while in SL. I was running SL at the time I paired the headset to the Mac. SL started using the Bluetooth headset for audio when I disconnected my call in Skype. Now I get no audio from SL thru Built-In Output.
I first just turned off Bluetooth, then when launching SL, I would get a system message that Bluetooth Audio failed. Same after reboot. I completely deleted the headset from the Bluetooth Preferences and rebooted. I no longer get the alert that Bluetooth Audio failed, but there is still no sound from SL.
I cleared the SL cache as well, and even looked in the SL preferences XML file. Of course, there is nothing there. I don't think this is an SL problem, because the alert was a system-generated alert. I've gotten the same alert when running Audacity and Bluetooth was turned off.
All alert sounds and iTunes work normally.
I'm at a loss on this one. It's probably something simple, but I'm kinda wigged out for some reason about this. Any ideas anyone?

Well, worked on this some more after the post, and discovered that media played with QuickTime Player or even Windows Media Player are also sending output to Bluetooth audio. Oddly, iTunes still sends output to Built In.
I discovered a Skype crash log in the trash can, so I think audio output got whacked when Skype crashed. I just can't find a way to fix it. I've reset default audio in both the Sound preference pane and using the Audio MIDI setup utility.
Gah!
I'll post a resolution if I find one.

Wooooo! Fixed!

It be fixed. In case anyone else has a problem with audio from SL being directed to the wrong output device, or there is no sound at all from SL, but other programs like iTunes work and system sounds are okay, here's the fix: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300832Basically, some audio-using application will whack your default output to a frequency other than 44,100 Hz. To fix, open Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder, in the "Properties For:" popup choose Built In Output, then at the bottom of the window, in the "Format:" popup, choose 44,100 HZ. Close the window, and you'll be back to normal. See the tech note above for more info, and beware that certain other programs that use audio may again reset the format to an invalid frequency, causing the problem to recur. Hope this helps anyone who has a similar problem.

Mac sound in SL
06-16-2008 07:43
Hi
I've also suffered from this loss of sound in SL. When I use a different application that changes the sample and bit rates...SL then has absolutely no sound. I have tried the Audio/midi box change the rate fix...but I still have no sound in SL. The only that seems to fix this for me is rebooting about 10 times!
I'm using an Intel Mac 2.16 Ghz duo core with Mac OS X 10.4.11
This issue is especially annoy as I am a musician and often change sound cards and setting in the course of my work.
Any comprehensive help gratefully received!!
