I'm having problems seeing certain unicodes in SL ♔ for example (u+2654) works fine here, and all my other apps, but in SL it just looks like a little block.

Why is that, and how can I fix it?

At a minimum, make sure AppleGothic is active, SL looks for that one and it should give you decent coverage. Also if you went through a "slimming" exercise and took out any international fonts, you may want to put them back, because SL looks for the system ones. It doesn't seem to try to fill in characters from elsewhere.
