Mac Pro Noise??

Hi All,

I have been using my 2.8 dual quad mac pro in 2L for about a year now (when I am not video editing), and things have run great - unless there are obvious 2l issue.

Anywho, the tower has always been super quiet, but now it seems to be louder with a low rumble when I am in 2L. It stops as soon as I reduce the window, and will be just fine if I open up Final Cut Pro and edit some vids. But if I open up 2L again, boom, the higher noise level. I suspect this may have something to do with the video card/Fan.

Its not major issue I admit, but its the sort of thing that bugs the hell out of me!

Any thoughts what might be the issue?

Thanks!

SL requires more processing power than even FCP. Your machine is running louder because the processor is working harder and getting hotter, and the fans run at speeds that are linked to a thermostat. The hotter, the more fan speed, the louder.

I will say that on my brand new MBP, SL is quiet as a mouse. A little too quiet... it kind of scares me that the machine isn't being sufficiently cooled. But so far, so good.

been around a year and you still call SL "2L" ????

Could be so many things... no way to give you a real answer. Most likely you have a fan.. somewhere in the system (there are many) that is getting bad, and only noticeable so far when it spins up faster than idle.
