Hi,

I'm pretty much sold on the new 24" iMac and about to pull the credit card trigger -- before I do, just wondering if anyone has any advice on graphics card. I've already decided to add another GB of RAM to give me 2GB, but can't decide on the 7300GT vs. the 7600GT.

I know it's only about an $85 upgrade, but it'll delay me getting my new Mac by 8-12 days (because you can't just buy it from the store).

So, should I wait and get the upgrade to the 7600GT? The big question is not the wait (I can handle that, I guess), but if people have noticed better performance in SL with the 7600GT? Or, maybe there are problems with it?

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Drools for a 24" iMac but suggests you read up first!

I need to run to RL work, but I would search this forum for '7300' and '7600'.
Watch for people reporting issues with 'drivers'.
its not a question of 'speed' in this case, but of compatibility.

I seem to recall some of the vid-cards have bad drivers.
There was a long thread or two on the smaller iMacs (20", etc.)

Eventually, the drivers will be fixed/updated...but 'til then, you'll want something that's FUN!

Spend the money for the video upgrade. It will give you much better SL performance.

Apple's standard video card offerings are surprisingly low-end for systems in their cost range. I think it's because many of their core users have no interest in 3D performance at all. For instance, one of the configurations available for the Mac Pro tower is dual 7300GT cards -- a configuration that is just plain silly for the gamer. (A single 7600GT would outperform the dual cards, and a 7900 would blow them out of the water.) The people that want the dual 7300s are video editors; they're not using them to get 3D graphic performance, they're using them to drive more monitors.
