Wow. I just set up my shiny new iMac.
I am blown away.
I had been running SL on, and it pains me to say this, a G4 iBook. I knew my SL experience was not as good as those with higher spec machines. But I was having fun anyway so I was not all that bothered.
My expectations for the new machine were that it would probably make things run a bit faster and stuff might rez a little quicker.
But my expectations were way too low. Waaaaay too low.
I am so happy with my iMac. And I am even happier with SL now that I see what everyone else has been seeing all this time.
What a spectacular world. And all the more spectacular for looking at it through such a beautiful computer.

I'm so happy you posted this because I bought a new iMac two days ago. I have yet to set it up because I need to empty out the contents of my old PC first. I was running SL on my Macbook and it's been going extremely slow for me. I was wondering how it would run on the new iMac.
Now I can't wait!

Isn't it nice? I ran SL for over a year on my G4. I mean, it was okay. But since moving to the MacBook Pro and the Intel processor... what a difference. Anyway, good for you. Congrats.

Don't, I repeat DON'T, migrate any of the old SL files to the new computer. Instead download a brand new, clean, copy of the viewer and install it. If you try to use any of the original files from the old computer, the SL viewer will just hang You wont lose any inventory items because they are stored on the SL servers (see my post under the "New IMac with ATI Card?" thread Grim

I migrated from a Mac Mini to a Mac Pro tower, and it went without a hitch. I did have the auto hardware detect option already set in preferences, but didn't do anything else unusual. Just transferred all the files along with my other apps, as part of the set up for the system. The normal client and release candidate both migrated fine. (I hadn't bothered with Windlight because the Mini couldn't take advantage of it.)

Congrats. Lucky you - my MBP runs Sl for up to about 10 sec before it Kernel Panics... sayonara and that's it. And my home Mac Pro would run like a three-legged dog rejected by Cesar Millan, until I got the ATi upgrade graphics card...

I'm a live musician so I'm streaming live audio while running the client, and so on. I have the 2.4GHz model, stock 2MB RAM, and the standard GeForce 8600M GT graphics. I wonder why my performance isn't anything like yours?

Really? What vid card you got in that MBP? I'm one of the "lucky" ones that got mine shipped with the Nvidia 8600. When it runs (which is not very often) it runs slowly and crashes hard and fast. i run the client on a 2.16 MBP with an ATI 1600 and it's fine except for the continuous crashes.
i heard there's some issues with the new MBPs though

Help!!
02-01-2008 08:15
Hi I recently got a new imac and sl worked great on it for the first few weeks. Now it either crashes or I can't move anywhere after it loads. I am extremely frustrated and don't know what to do to get it to run properly. If anyone can offer advice that would be great. How could it work so well before and then suck so bad now?

Am I right to assume that you've cleared your cache both manually and in preferences? Also, how long has this crashing been going on? If it's only a day or two, well, you know, SL has been more borky than usual all week...
