How the heck do I use a one-click mouse for everyday tasks in SL (as in, manipulating objects, etc.)

I use either the approprite key with it, <ctrl> as example, or I select what I want in the edit menu that pops up, there you can choose radio buttons for rotate, stretch and all that. Maybe not always the fastest way, but works fine for me ;-)

Uhh, don't use a Mac :P

That still is one of the biggest headscratchers in computing. That is why Photoshop (originally an Apple program) has these goofy keyboard gynmastics to simply zoom and unzoom.

LOL... it is a real headscratcher.

On the Mac side, I'd highly recommend shelling out a few bucks for a much better mouse, preferably one with a scroll wheel and even side buttons. Will go a LONG way in terms of productivity.

Here we go again, hehe. To zoom in Photoshop, you either use your scroll wheel or you use the navigator like you're supposed to. Admittedly, PS7 was a little tempramental at times with the scroll wheel, sometimes having trouble determining whether you were trying to zoom in & out or scroll up & down, but CS has solved that problem. Frankly, there's more "keyboard dancing" involved with zooming in Windows browsers & MS Office programs (ctrl-scroll) than there is in Photoshop.

Anyway, as much as I'm not a Mac fan, for SL one mouse button is all you ever really need. Unlike something like Maya, which requires 3 buttons for camera dolly, track, & tumble, SL uses ctrl, alt, & shift for these functions with just the left muse button. The only discernable difference I could see in using a one-button mouse in SL instead of a multi-button mouse is when accessing the pie menu, which would be easy enough to do with a ctrl-click instead of a right click, and that's second nature to Mac users anyway.

Hi! Hold down the Command key while you click. It emulates the right button on more ...ummm .... well developed mice.

But I agree with Torley. Having a multi-button mouse is worth every penny you spend on it. I use a five button mouse with my Mac, and I love it. (Get one with a scroll wheel, too, if you can.)

Wait a minute - I just noticed this. (Well, I noticed it, and then was called away for about an hour.... :D )

Goofy keyboard combinations in Photoshop?

What are you talking about?

Scroll wheel to free zoom to the spot under your mouse, as Chosen Few said.
Command+Spacebar to get the Zoom In tool.
Command+Option+Spacebar to get the Zoom out.
Command+0 to zoom to fit the screen
Command+Option+0 to zoom to 100%
Command+Equals to zoom to 50%
Command+'-' to zoom out in steps
Command+'+' to zoom in in steps

What could possibly be more intuitive than that? :D :p

Well, okay, honestly I'm so used to them all that I don't have to think about them any more. :D And, in PS CS2, if you don't like them, you can change them. :D

I never could understand why folks get so bent out of shape by the single-button mouse. I am effortlessly able to move between a one-button mouse (MacOS), a two-button mouse (Win), and a three button mouse (Unix). I never feel constrained in any of the operating systems with the exception of:
  1. Cutting and pasting. Unix is the only one that does it right allowing you to paste with a middle click.
  2. Gaming. Regardless of the OS, one benefits greatly from multiple mouse buttons.

Aside from that, I can drive an automatic without griping about the missing pedal and stick just fine, thanks. :D

I love Macs, even have 6 of them, but the one button mouse has never been my cup of tea. Actually even a two button mouse with a PC has never worked for me. Thank the Gods for Kensington and their multi button mouse with scroll wheel and configuration control panel. These work on both Macs and PC's.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?
Yes, it's true, I have a blog now!

I finally found a one button mouse to be too limiting when I started gaming significantly, not being able to do with out the scroll wheel for camera zoom and the option to right click for actions.

After a brief dalliance with the Microsoft Intellimouse series I settled on Logitech and found them to be great, after using Dual Optical for a good while I finally settled on the MX310.

Their driver software looks good but is a little sucky - tends to drop-out from time to time and I seem to recall had a conflict or two as well. I just use the excellent 'USB Overdrive' shareware now for both my mouse and iShock II gamepad, for which latter the drivers truly were a royal pain compatibility wise at times.

Cannot go back to one button mouse now though - it's OK enough when I fiddle with my 'ancient' Macs on System 7, but for modern usage with contextual menus and bells and whistles on OS X, it just kills me !

I mean you can take the Apple loyalty thing too far - I did for a long time :o but ultimately I just found it easier to have a multi-button wheel mouse which makes it easier to get stuff done. Why don't Apple just make one and be done with it !!

LOL! absolutely!

1st thing I do when I get a new Mac is put the mouse in the bin ! ( the real bin that is ! )

3 button mice with scroll wheels are SO cheap, buy one !

I personally like the Microsoft optical mice, no drivers needed for them.

I had to switch to a multi-button mouse when I started to use LightWave. It's possible to use it with a one button mouse, but it really slows you down.

I use the Kensington 5 button with scroll wheel, because I like the software that comes with it. I love being able to chord; I have a whole mini-menu of the things I do most often there.

When I'm back to a single button on my laptop I really miss the added functionality of my "normal" mouse.

Powerbook/iBook owners should check this out, a replacement driver for the trackpad that gives it programmable, multi button, scrollwheel behaviour ...

SideTrack, track pad driver replacement

I've been using it for over a year and like LaunchBar it's one of those things that once you've used it you cant work without it.

Seconded...particularly if you don't have one of the newest Powerbooks with the two-finger trackpad scrolling built in.

Default Folder is my must-have system utility. I hate working on a machine that doesn't have it installed.

Can't live without my buttons
06-07-2005 14:01
I have a 5 button w/ a scroll wheel. I set up one of the buttons to be delete and another as enter. the L&R are normal and the scroll is a button (not used in SL). This is an untouchable setup;FAST... Also... in Autocad; I can pan w/ the scroll/button. I Couldn't work without this mouse. I have often thought "I need a backup; Just in case something happens to this one"...No down time. :D

Did anyone actually answer Denise's question?

Denise -- while Ctrl-Click acts as the "right-click" equivalent in the rest of Mac OS X, Linden Lab has programmed Second Life to use Command-Click.

Should solve your issues. Else, you can purchase just about any name-brand USB mult-button mouse and Mac OS X should support it natively and it should work fine in SL.

Sorry just reread and noticed Robin Sojourner's mentioning of Command-Click being right-click equivalent. Thanks, Robin.
