I have an iMac that I purchased in November. It had been running SL wonderfully until May. Then, everything stopped working. It seems as though some data is not getting through. I cannot cross a sim border, whether teleporting, flying or walking. When I try any of those, I crash.

I am premium member and own land. I am unable to see land information. It all comes up blank. Also, my group list is sometimes empty. The graphics are still great and the speeds are good as long as I stay in the sim that I log into.

I have had a support ticket in with the Linden's since the beginning of May and have met with much frustration. There is still no resolution to my issue and now, they have stopped responding to my comments on the ticket.

I am pretty much a techno idiot. This is why the Mac was a good choice of computer for me. I would so love to play sl on my 20 inch wide screen again. Has anybody had these same issues? If so, has anyone found a solution?

Which Mac OS are you running? Which model of Mac, and which video card?

SL is phasing out support for Mac OS X 10.3.9 and lower. If you recently tried to update the client, and are on 10.3.9 or earlier, you probably have an incompatable version of the client for your OS.

For what it's worth, the current and release candidate clients run fine under Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) on my Mac Pro tower, but that is a pretty high-end Mac. I upgraded my hardware last December from an older Mac OSX 10.3.9 system because the demands that the Windligt beta were placing on my system made it clear that the older hardware wasn't long for this virtual world.

OS Version? That looks like it should run OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) just fine.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 or better is what is listed now on the SL website as the minimum requirement to run SL on a Mac. You'll likely have to upgrade at least to Tiger to run SL.

SL permissions messed up
07-17-2008 14:43
I've been having problems lately with the sell permissions always in grey, even when checked. I'm running osx 10.5 on a G5 tower, tried several sl versions. Even went back to an earlier mac OSX to try sl versions that previously worked fine, same problem persists. This is making building near impossible dealing with all the permissions problems.

I am running Leopard 10.5. I don't think it is the OS because sl had been running very well for months. Something happened in May that shut it down.

Mac

Does anybody else believe that the Mac users are not getting the services that the pc users are? It seems that when I submit a ticket, I often hear that they are not well trained in Macs. There is less of a service for our money that the pc users, even though we pay the same money. There are getting to be more macs out there in the world. Maybe SL and the Lindens can respond to the growing need for Mac support

try the latest preview release

I've been using the 1.20.14.92115 preview version with Leopard and its running extremely smoothly for me. except for the force quit required on logging out many times. give it a shot.

I'm on a Mac Pro tower, running Leopard, and SL works fine.

Before Windlight started hogging resources so badly, I was doing fairly well with a Mac Mini and OS X 10.3.9, though the frame rate sucked. I sold that and got the best Mac I could afford when I saw how badly Windlight sucked on my Mini.

I am a new member of the Mac Lover's group. A member of that group said that the 2wire modems are causing a lot of problems for us. Do any of you folks use a 2wire modem? And if so, are you having problems, too.

The question is will ask this fellow is, if it is the 2wire causing my troubles, why does sl work on my HP laptop?

Hmmm.....

Thank you. Is this viewer connected to the main grid yet? Also, I have the same problem with every viewer out there, even the Onrez viewer.

Kal, you seriously need to try deleting the user-specific preference files. Search your hard drive for your avatar name, with an underscore instead of a space - "kal_habana". Delete all the folders that that folder is in, including that one. Restart the client, and it will be back to newbie settings, with nothing cached. This fixes a LOT of problems that persist from one client version to another. It's the SL equivalent of manually deleting your web browser's chached files and cookies.

I would agree with you but for the fact that I had my whole computer wiped with a full reinstall of the OS. The result of this was that all evidence of sl was wiped off my computer. I then downloaded sl again and still had the same issues.

Unable to log on (10.3.9 running)
07-26-2008 20:23
Hello,

I haven't been using Sl much of late, but tried to log on tonigh and it seems I am unable since I run 10.3.9. Is there a way to use sl if I download an older update? Does anyone have one?

Thanks!

2wire
07-30-2008 08:54
I just got a response to my support ticket that I have had in with the Lindens since MAY!! Apparently the Mac clients and 2wire modems to not get along. That is the reason I had had all these troubles. Are there any other mac users using a 2wire out there? If so, Let's unite to try to get the Linden's to work on this. There was no indication in the response that they had any plans to fix this. Please, let ever mac user you know. I love having wireless in my house for my laptop but am really annoyed about not being able to use the iMac for sl.

Please, Mac users, put some pressure on...

Good news! I just got word from the Lindens that they have acquired one of these 2wire modems and are working on a solution. WTG, Lindens...Please hurry!

Look on Nicholaz Beresford's site, I'm sure there were links that allowed older client downloads.

Otherwise, look on eBay for Tiger (10.4) it should be cheap enough ($50ish would be my guess)

I've been having the same issue but I have a brand new macbook pro

Terrible crash issues, connection issues, even though my internet connection works perfectly for every other program I use online.

I crash

appear underwater

appear grey

can't move my avatar

can't teleport

can't use contacts (the entire contact list says loading... )

warning messages popup for all my clothes, gestures, sounds, etc.

So yeah pretty much nothing works.

I'm running ...

What modem do you use...Is it a 2wire? If so, there is no fix other than to revert everything backwards in time...

Adding memory is a fix?
08-15-2008 01:03
I wanted to add my experience... I also have had the freezes and the huge lag times. (One frame every 30 seconds! Wow! \o/ )

Tonight, I made one change, and I'm testing now to see if it is a permanent fix. I'll post again as I know more.

For reasons unrelated to SL (for my Windows BootCamp, since Windows can only "see" 3GB of memory, anyway), I upgraded the memory in my MacBook Pro. I had the standard factory-issue 2GB memory, and I upgraded to 3GB. My MacBook Pro is less than three months old.

Tonight, with the expanded 3GB memory, SL ran more smoothly than it ever has on my Mac. As smoothly as on my Windows BootCamp. I was online for close to three hours, and had good framerates and no lag spells at all. I also ran Firefox side-by-side with it, and had the screensaver pop up twice, both times on purpose to test.

I will concede that I was in my skybox the whole time, puttering around, so I didn't tax the system heavily with sim crossing or 200+ meter camera views. Nor did I tax the system by running any other apps, like iTunes or Mail or iChat. I kept my internet connection clear and wide open.

Also, it seems to me that my laptop ran much, much cooler.

As I said, I'll be testing this over the weekend. But I'd like to hear from anyone else who is NOT using the stock memory configuration, i.e., you've added memory.

Perhaps LL isn't keeping SL client software within the confines of a standard Mac configuration? What are the configurations used by the developers for coding and internal testing?

I'd also like to know if this affects 15-inch and 17-inch systems equally. It might tell us something about the nature of the problem, no?
