I am thinking of replacing an ageing PC wil a Mac. Either the iMac or Mac Pro. I have had a Powerbook G4 for a few years now but the performance on SL was something to be desired. Are there still issues with the newer Macs such as the iMac and new Mac Pro or are things more or less sorted out. I have tried trawling the forum here, but with such conflicting views I am not sure at all. One thing that does seem to stand out is with the Mac Pro, keep off the nVidea cards and go for the ATI. This seems to be totally opposite to what was advised with a PC.

Um, my MacBook Pro with the NVidia GeForce 8600M GT card runs SL pretty darn well, especially with the latest OS and graphics update (10.5.2).
But yeah, different people seem to have very different experiences.

Mac Pro rocks, if you can afford it. I have a December 2007 Quad core Mac Pro, the ATI X1900 XT Card with 512 MB VRAM, and am running OS X 10.5.2. I get over 30 FPS in most situations. The newest Mac Pros have a different lineup of video cards, but seem to be OK with the latest graphics drivers and OS updates. A friend of mine bought the 24" iMac, and is quite pleased with it, getting 24 FPS or so with the 256 MB VRAM built in video in that Mac. Both the Mac Pro and the current models of the iMac seem to be good Macs for SL.

I cant really recommend a Mac Pro unless you are doing other things that need really high CPU power... with Xeons and FBDIMMs, it costs way too much, for standard desktop type use and SL. If you really want a decent desktop mac, might look at an iMac... Mac Pro is fine if you want to waste an extra $1000... would be nice if someday Apple would start making decent priced towers again, like they did in the G4 era, but its unlikely, they want to sell iMacs, and think anything else would hurt sells of bigger profit margin machines.
