Sorry if this has been addressed already. Im considering buying a 24" imac intel, but am unsure as to whether it will run SL, as it only has one video card option. I'm not real computer savvy, so if this is a stupid question, i apologize. Any direction would be greatly appreciated! Im currently running SL on my 17" g4 powerbook w/ little to no problems, so i dont want to screw up w/ a major purchase to end up w/ no SL!
Thanks!

Sorry about taking a long time to spot your question - you've probably already bought. I got my 24' imac the first week they came out. SL experience was terrible - crashing all the time. But it was the mac's fault - a dud - which was declared dead on arrival after a week of worries. The replacement is wonderful and has never given me any problems. Runs SL really, really well. Can't compare it to anything except my old G4 with a 32MB graphics card. Chalk and cheese as you might imagine.
I have the 256 graphics card in the iMac. I can run two clients with reasonable performance (also have 2GB of RAM).

the 20" runs sl really well, and that's on a lesser video card. for reference, i get about 60+fps in a skybox, 5-10 in a crowded, laggy club.

Constant crashing 24" iMac : (

I just bought the standard configuration 24" iMac, mainly for my SL experience. I've had it for two days and it crashes about every 10 - 20 minutes on SL. When I called SL Technical Support, they tell me their records show that it is my video card. Does anyone know if there is an incompatability with the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 and SL? Also, can anyone tell me the best Graphics settings for this iMac? Thanks!

Lots of discussion is already here about cards.

I just returned from the local Apple center in Orlando Fl. where the Apple reps were very helpful.

All their computers were on a broadband network and I downloaded SL on to:

A 20" IMac, 1 gig memory, 1600 ATI card with 128meg. Sl loaded quickly and ran well (with a slight loss of texture detail and some minor jerkyness in avatar movement.

A 24" IMac , 2 gig memory, 7300 Nivida card. Sl loaded fast and ran great, wonderful textures and very smooth avatar movements. a very impressive performance!

A Mac pro, 3gig processor, 4 gig memory, ATi 1900 card with 512 meg memory. Sl loaded as fast as the broadbad would let it, and was really impressive loading textures and had a natural looking, smooth avatar movement.

No problems loading Sl or running it on any machine, no crashes or problems in over two hours of logging in and out of each machine.

Sterling

I had exactly the same problems you describe on my iMac 24" which I bought the week they were released. It had the 256 graphics card. Eventually the machine died completely and wouldn't even restart from the installation DVD. So it was declared dead on arrival. The replacement has been wonderful and has only crashed using SL once in 3 months.

I think some of the graphics cards are faulty or badly fitted - but that's just a wild guess really.

Your machine should run SL very well. The one concession I make now is to set the graphics card usage to 128MB in SL preferences, even though I have a 256 card - that seems to stop some jerkiness.

If you need to know more about mine, IM me in world sometime (although I'm not online much).
